This 1966 Pontiac GTO convertible was purchased by the seller’s father in 1982 and given to the seller as a graduation gift around 1986. A body-off refurbishment was carried out between 2011 and 2012, with work including a bare-metal repaint in blue, reupholstered white vinyl seats, and the installation of a Muncie four-speed manual transmission. The 389ci V8 was also rebuilt and fitted with three two-barrel carburetors at that time, and additional equipment includes a white soft top, air conditioning, a push-button radio, a dual exhaust system, and power steering and brakes.
Finished from the factory in Fontaine Blue, the body was removed from the frame and repainted during the refurbishment. A replacement white soft top has been fitted, and additional exterior features include stacked headlamps, hood scoops, and chrome bumpers.
Steel 14″ Rally wheels feature gray centers and polished trim rings and are mounted with 7.75-width redline Firestone tires. Braking is handled by drums at all four corners, and the car came equipped from the factory with power steering and brakes.
The interior was refreshed with reupholstered Parchment vinyl seats and door panels along with replacement black carpeting. Faux-woodgrain trim adorns the dash, and additional interior features include a cueball shift knob, air conditioning, a push-button radio, rubber Pontiac-branded floor mats, and lap belts for all occupants. The removed center console and interior upholstery are included in the sale.
A two-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a 120-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 5,100-rpm redline. The five-digit odometer shows just under 71k miles.
The 389ci V8 was factory rated at 335 horsepower and was rebuilt during the refurbishment in 2011. Triple two-barrel carburetors were installed at that time, and the car is equipped with a dual exhaust system. The removed carburetor and intake manifold are included in the sale.
A Munice M21 four-speed manual transmission was installed in place of the factory two-speed automatic during current ownership. A leak was repaired in June 2021, and the removed transmission will accompany the car.
