This 1960 Morris 850 is a North American-market example that was sold new in August 1960 to a proprietor of Grays Harbor Motors in Aberdeen, Washington. The car was the subject of a series of telegram-style advertisements that promoted the model and the dealership by chronicling a road trip by the original owner’s family of five to San Francisco, California, for the February 1961 NADA convention. Following an extended period of storage, the car was acquired by the seller in September of 2016, and it was subsequently refreshed, with work including repairing and refinishing the front fender and boot lid, rebuilding the carburetor and heater, and replacing the seat foam, carpets, and weather seals. Finished in red over a patterned cloth interior, the car is powered by an 850cc inline-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle.
The car was finished in Cherry Red from the factory, and the front fender and boot lid were repaired and refinished under current ownership. Exterior features include replacement chrome bumpers, re-chromed front and rear overriders, a driver-side fender-mounted mirror, and bright rocker trim that extends over the wheel arches. The weather seals have been replaced.
Silver-finished 10″ steel wheels have polished hubcaps and are mounted with 145-series CEAT Veltro tires. The brake master cylinder is a replacement.
The left-hand-drive cabin features patterned cloth upholstery on the seats, which were rebuilt with replacement foam, and the seller installed matching upholstery on the door panels. The floors are protected by red carpets that were installed under current ownership. The heater was rebuilt, and a period-style rear-view mirror was also installed. Wicker storage baskets are housed beneath the rear seats.
The two-spoke steering wheel frames a 90-mph speedometer with an inset fuel-level gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 26k miles.
The trunk is equipped with a jack, tool kit, battery cover, and a full-size spare tire with a replacement wheel.
The 850cc A-series inline-four features a replacement battery and a rebuilt carburetor. The electrical system was repaired under current ownership, and a replacement washer bottle was added to the engine bay.
Power is sent to the front wheels via a four-speed manual transaxle. The clutch master cylinder is a replacement.
The sale includes original purchase documents, newspaper clippings that chronicle a 1961 road trip undertaken by the original owner, and recent service records.
