This 1972 Pontiac Firebird Formula was delivered new to Joseph’s Pontiac in Norwell, Massachusetts in December 1971 and was acquired by the seller in 1978. This example is finished in Revere Silver over black and powered by a 455ci HO V8 paired with a Richmond five-speed manual transmission and 12-bolt rear axle with a limited-slip 3.08:1 ratio rear differential. Features include a Ram Air hood, air conditioning, modified suspension, a Butler Performance camshaft, upgraded engine internals, a Hurst Shifter, a push-button Delco AM/FM/Cassette stereo, a custom dual exhaust system, and a WS6 close-ratio steering box. A refurbishment is said to have been completed in 2018 that consisted of bodywork and a repaint, and the engine was modified in 2021 to run on unleaded fuel.
The car is said to have been refurbished in Revere Silver and features dual “Ram Air” hood scoops, hood pins, Formula 455 badging, honeycomb grilles, a body-colored front valance, a rear spoiler, polished dual exhaust outlets, dual sport mirrors, and a chrome bumper, drip rails, and window trim.
Silver 17″ Year One Honeycomb wheels wear 275/40 Yokohama S.drive tires. The suspension is said to be modified with Herb Adams larger sway bars, upgraded bushings, springs, shocks, and a WS6 close ratio steering box.
The cabin features seats reupholstered in black vinyl joined by a matching headliner and door panels. Equipment includes air conditioning, manually adjustable seats, power windows, shoulder belts, a center console, and a push-button AM/cassette stereo.
The three-spoke formula steering wheel sits ahead of an engine-turned instrument panel housing a 160-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 99k miles.
The 455ci HO V8 was reportedly refurbished with components including forged Super Duty rods, TRW pistons, Clevite bearings, a Cloys timing chain, a 455 Super Duty oil pump, and a Ram IV windage tray. The ported cylinder heads are said to have been rebuilt with Farrera bronze valve guides, PAC valve springs, Smith Brothers pushrods, titanium retainers, lash caps, and Sharp roller rockers. The engine features a ported intake, ceramic coated Hooker headers, a Robb mini starter, and a Holley L88 800-cfm spread-bore carburetor.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a Richmond five-speed manual transmission and a 12-bolt 3.08:1 ratio limited-slip rear axle. A replacement Hays 11″ clutch and forged flywheel have reportedly been installed.
