This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL was acquired by the seller in Hawaii in 1991 and later relocated with him to Michigan. Finished in red over black vinyl, it is powered by replacement 2.8-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes a black soft top, 14″ steel wheels with hubcaps, and an aftermarket CD stereo. The car is said to have been stored in a heated garage from 2012-2020, and subsequent servicing included fluid changes and replacement of the battery, spark plugs, and thermostat housing.
Originally Silver-Grey Metallic (180), the car was repainted to its present shade of red in the early 1990s, at which time dents and rust are said to have been addressed with filler. Features include a black convertible top, a left-side rearview mirror, and chrome bumpers and trim.
Red-painted 14″ steel wheels wear color-matched covers and older Michelin Symmetry white-stripe tires. The car is equipped with power steering and power-assisted brakes.
The cabin features black MB-Tex on the seats as well as matching door panels, replacement gray carpets, and a red-painted dashboard. Equipment includes hand-crank windows, a wood center console tray, a Becker Europa AM/FM radio, and storage pockets in both doors. A newer Rockford-Fosgate CD stereo with a remote control is mounted in an under-dash compartment and hidden behind a flip-down lid.
The two-spoke steering wheel features a horn ring and frames a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The tachometer has been disconnected. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 62k miles.
The replacement fuel-injected 2.8-liter M130 inline-six is said to have been sourced from a 1971 280SE and installed in 1997. The thermostat housing, spark plugs, coolant, battery, and two fuel hoses were changed in December 2020.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission that received a fluid change in December 2020.
The car is supplied with manufacturer’s literature and service records for work completed under current ownership.
