This 1953 Arnolt-MG coupe is one of approximately 103 examples built between 1953 and 1954 and features Bertone-designed bodywork mounted to an MG TD chassis. Reportedly sold new in the US, the car received a refurbishment in the early 2000s and was imported to France following the current owner’s acquisition in 2006. The bodywork is finished in white over red leather upholstery, and power comes from a numbers-matching 1,250cc XPAG inline-four equipped with dual SU carburetors and mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Additional features include a Moto-Lita steering wheel, an aftermarket cassette radio, pop-out rear vent windows, and polished knock-off wire wheels.
Just 67 coupes were built during the two-year production run, and the Bertone-built body is comprised of a steel shell with an aluminum hood, trunk lid, and doors. This example came finished from the factory in Old English Whit and was repainted during prior ownership. Exterior features include rear vent windows, Bertone badging, pop-out door handles, and Marchal driving lamps.
Polished 15” wire wheels feature two-eared knock-off spinners and are mounted with Dunlop SP4 tires. Stopping power is provided by drums at all four corners, and a full-size spare is found in the trunk.
The left-hand drive cabin features seats trimmed in red leather with white piping and matching door panels and carpets. Lap belts are fitted for both occupants, and equipment includes a locking glovebox and an aftermarket cassette radio. Areas of fading are visible on the carpets.
A wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel sits ahead of a red dashboard housing Jaeger instrumentation that includes a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock, a 100-mph speedometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 6k miles.
The 1,250cc XPAG inline-four is equipped with dual SU carburetors and sends power to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The seller notes that fluid changes were performed in late 2020.
