This 1931 Ford Model A 400 convertible sedan was acquired by the seller’s father approximately 30 years ago, and it was the subject of a four-year mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment that was completed in 2019. The car is finished in black over brown leather and is powered by a 201ci inline-four paired with a three-speed manual transmission. Additional features include a tan convertible top, wire wheels, cowl lights, dual brake lights, a swing-out ventilating windshield, and an adjustable driver’s seat.
This A 400 is one of approximately 5,000 examples produced for the 1931 model year and features a unique folding roof design compared to contemporary Ford models. The body was painted black during the refurbishment, and the reproduction tan convertible top features replacement wood framework. The bumpers are said to have been re-chromed, and additional exterior details include cowl lights, running boards, brake lights, and dual side mirrors. The windshield opens at the bottom to aid in cabin ventilation.
The black wire wheels wear reproduction Firestone whitewall tires, and a matching spare is mounted to the left-front fender. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel mechanical drum brakes.
The cabin features seats reupholstered in brown leather with matching carpets and door panels as well as simulated-wood paint on the window frames and dashboard. Appointments include an adjustable driver’s seat, door pockets, and armrests and ash trays for rear seat occupants. Replacement wood frames and floorboards were installed during the refurbishment. The seller notes that the door handles and window cranks are from a 1933 Ford.
The four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a central gauge cluster that includes an ignition switch, an ammeter, and a barrel-type speedometer. The five-digit odometer shows one-tenth of a mile. True mileage is unknown.
The 201ci inline-four was rebuilt during the refurbishment and is equipped with a six-volt generator. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed manual transmission.
The seller states that the transmission, clutch, and rear axle assembly were rebuilt during the refurbishment.
