This 1957 Ford Thunderbird is said to have been purchased new in San Diego, California by the seller’s late father-in-law in February 1957, and it has remained in the family. Powered by a D-code 312ci V8 paired with a three-speed manual transmission with overdrive, the car was customized in 1971 by Bertolucci’s Body & Fender Shop in Sacramento, California with frenched headlights and taillights, flared fenders, and copper-colored paint, as well as alterations to the tan interior, the trunk, and the porthole hardtop, the last of which bears a patterned vinyl covering. The seller states that the clutch, electronic ignition, spark plugs, mufflers, and exhaust manifolds have been replaced within the past ten years.
Customization work said to have been performed in 1971 by Bertolucci’s Body & Fender Shop included crafting molded headlights with hidden seams, revised side trim, body-color fender-mounted mirrors, revised taillights, and flared fenders. The car subsequently was refinished in 30 coats of “Honey Metallic” lacquer paint, according to the seller. The removable porthole hardtop is covered with floral-patterned vinyl. Other features include an eggcrate grille, a hood scoop, chrome bumpers, and tail fins.
Slotted 15″ US Mags wheels are mounted with Goodyear whitewall tires. A spare is situated in the trunk, and a set of stock wheels and covers is included in the sale. Braking is handled by hydraulic drums.
The seats and door panels were custom upholstered in tufted champagne-colored vinyl during the 1971 customization, the dash was padded, and headrests were added to the seats. The cabin has matching carpets, and equipment includes lap belts and a replacement cassette stereo.
A tan three-spoke steering wheel fronts instrumentation that includes a 140-mph speedometer, a 5k-rpm tachometer, and gauges measuring fuel level and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 74k miles.
The 312ci Thunderbird Special V8 was equipped from the factory with a single Holley four-barrel carburetor and ribbed Thunderbird-script valve covers, and it was rated at 245 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque when new. The car recently had an oil change, and the transmission and rear-end fluids were checked. The seller states that the electronic ignition, plugs, and wires have been replaced.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed manual transmission with planetary overdrive. The clutch assembly was replaced in 2012. Service in summer 2021 included replacing the right-side muffler as well as replacing the left and right exhaust manifolds with resurfaced components.
Spare and removed parts including headlamp and taillamp bezels, fender skirts, radios, speakers, and weatherstripping will accompany the vehicle along with a set of wheels and wheel covers.
