This 1964 Mercedes-Benz 220SEb coupe was delivered new to a dealer in Paris, France. Documents included in the sale show it was impounded by Belgian authorities in 1977 and released a year later. When the seller purchased the car in 1979, he was a U.S. Army officer stationed at NATO Headquarters in Brussels; the vehicle would remain in the seller’s care in that city until it was imported to Georgia in October 2020. The pillarless coupe was refurbished and repainted metallic brown in Germany in 1980–81, and the 2.5-liter inline-six was replaced in 1982 with a powerplant said to have been sourced from a 250SE. Equipment includes a floor-shifted four-speed manual transmission, ivory-colored leather upholstery, and a sunroof. The car received an oil change in January 2021, and the handbrake was adjusted and a tune-up was performed, including adjusting the fuel mixture, in April 2021.
Originally finished in Graphite Grey (DB190), the car was refurbished and repainted metallic brown (DB404) by Karosseriebau Bach GmbH of Schweinfurt, Germany in 1980–81. The car features stacked sealed-beam headlights as well as chrome bumpers, rocker panel trim, and window surrounds. The seller reports that the car has experienced body and fender damage that was repaired over time. The seller also states that when mandatory annual Belgian technical inspections found corrosion on the body and/or frame, repairs were consequently carried out by Mercedes-Benz specialists in Germany or Belgium. The front windshield was replaced in 2011. The seller notes the windshield wipers need replacing, some surface rust is visible in the left rear wheel well, there is a chip of paint missing near the left door, a bubble in the paint near the 220 SE numerals on the back, and the chrome surrounds on the left rear window need to be reglued. The rear auxiliary taillight with a broken lens is an add-on safety item for use in heavy fog. Although not original nor required in the US, a replacement light is included with the sale.
Steel 13″ wheels with body-color covers are mounted with 185/80 Maxxis MA-1 whitewall tires showing 2017 date codes. Braking is handled by discs at all four corners. The handbrake was adjusted in May 2021. A jack and a spare tire are located in the trunk.
The cabin features front bucket seats upholstered in ivory leather with a matching rear bench, dash pad, and door panels, as well as matching replacement carpets. Wood trim adorns the dashboard and A-pillar trim. The seats were refurbished in 2017, and the front seats have three-point safety belts. Equipment includes a manually operated sunroof and a locking glovebox. The Becker Monte Carlo radio shown in the photographs is not fully installed and according to the seller may not be in operating condition. It is included, with the correct speaker for the radio and car, with the sale.
The black steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation including a 210-km/h speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 77k kilometers (~48k miles).
The M129 2.5-liter inline-six is said to be a replacement engine sourced from a mid-1960s 250SE, which featured Bosch mechanical fuel injection; the previous 2.2-liter inline-six failed in 1982. The seller states that the power-steering pump was rebuilt, and the cylinder head was replaced in the 1990s. The fuel-injection and ignition systems were refurbished in Nürnberg, Germany by Koller + Schwemmer GmbH, owners of the original Bosch tools and dies, in December 2010. The oil was changed in January 2021, and the fuel mixture was adjusted as part of a tune-up in April 2021.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a floor-shifted four-speed manual transmission. Over the years the seller states that a number of rust repairs have been performed on the chassis and body and that welded-in patches are apparent during underbody inspection. A set of spare 14″ wheels and tires, an English-language Mercedes workshop manual, and additional parts and books will convey with the car.
