This 1972 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 4.5 is finished in black over black leather and is powered by a 4.5-liter V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Service since the seller’s acquisition has included new front brake pads as well as repairs to the air-conditioning system.
The car was refinished in black in August 2013 under prior ownership, a process that is said to have involved removing the glass, reconditioning the brightwork, and the installation of replacement seals and weatherstripping. Exterior features include a polished front grille, window trim, side moldings, and bumpers. Period California blue license plates are fitted to the front and rear of the car, and the front doors were realigned in November 2020.
Steel 14″ wheels wear polished hubcaps with body-color centers and are wrapped in 215/70 Michelin Harmony tires that the seller states are in need of replacement due to age. A brake fluid flush was performed in May 2020, and at that time the front brake pads and idler arm were replaced as well.
The interior features seating surfaces upholstered in black leather with a matching dashboard, door panels, and carpeting. Wood trim aLents the dash, and amenities include air conditioning, power windows, rear passenger ash trays, and an automatic antenna. Air-conditioning work in May 2020 involved a conversion to R134a refrigerant as well as a repair to the air conditioning switches and heater control sliders.
VDO instrumentation consists of a 160-mph speedometer, a combination gauge, and an analog clock, the latter of which is inoperable. The five-digit odometer shows 20k miles.
The 4.5-liter V8 was rated at 230 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque when new. A coolant flush, oil service, and belt adjustment were performed in May 2020. Service under prior ownership in March 2012 included the installation of a rebuilt long block as well as refurbishment of the A/C compressor and replacement of the ignition rotor, distributor cap, spark plugs, a camshaft and rockers, radiator hoses, thermostat, and engine mounts.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission that was overhauled during the prior refurbishment concurrent with the replacement of the transmission mounts, driveshaft flex joint, and exhaust system.
