This 1973 Lotus Europa Twin Cam Special was acquired by the seller in 2015, and subsequent refurbishment work included refinishing the exterior in two-tone red and white with metallic green accents, retrimming the interior with black upholstery, and overhauls of the braking and suspension systems. Power comes from a rebuilt 1.6-liter DOHC inline-four mated to a five-speed manual transaxle, and equipment includes a wooden shift knob, Talbot Berlin mirrors, power windows, HRE three-piece 15″ wheels, a burl wood dashboard, replacement carpeting, tubular headers paired with a stainless-steel muffler, and a Bluetooth-capable stereo paired with a custom sound system.
The body was refinished in red with white and green accents in March 2017, and additional work included replacement of the exterior badging, fuel filler grommet, window seals, side marker lenses, and tail light lens gaskets. Equipment includes aluminum Talbot Berlin mirror housings as well as bright bumpers, window surrounds, and headlight rings.
Silver-finished 15″ HRE 505 three-piece wheels with polished lips are mounted with 195/50 front and 205/50 rear Nankang NS-2R Sportnex tires that were installed in 2018. Adjustable dampers were sourced from SJ SportsCars Limited in England and the suspension was overhauled, and the seller states that the braking system was also overhauled with replacement rear wheel cylinders and refurbished front calipers and dual Girling brake boosters.
During current ownership custom black carpeting with multiple layers of sound insulation was installed to match the black bucket seats, and the headliner was also replaced. The center console, steering column, A-pillars, door panels, and dashboard pads were retrimmed in black leather accented by red contrast stitching, and the burl wood dashboard fascia was installed along with red seat belts and replacement door hinges. Additional equipment includes a wooden Lotus-branded shift knob, an aftermarket power window system with red accent lighting, billet aluminum shift boot trim, and a Bluetooth-capable Planet Audio stereo equipped with a USB input and hooked to a 500-watt front trunk-mounted amplifier and Infinity speakers. The left door hinge requires adjustment and the right window fabric weather stripping is in need of replacement.
The leather-wrapped steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation including an 8k-rpm tachometer and a 140-mph speedometer, and auxiliary gauges are mounted in the center stack. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows under 78k miles.
The 1.6-liter DOHC “Big Valve” inline-four was rebuilt during prior ownership, with work said to include porting and polishing the head, an 0.040″ overbore of the block, regrinding the crankshaft, installation of a carburetor balance tube, and replacement of the pistons, connecting rods, valves, guides, springs, and water pump.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle. Tubular 4-2-1 headers are paired with an aftermarket exhaust system and a stainless-steel muffler.
Partial service records are included along with spare and removed parts, and a First in Class – Participants’ Choice Award trophy from the 2017 British Car Day.
