This 1973 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL 4.5 was acquired by the seller in January 2021 and relocated to California, reportedly following a four-year refurbishment by the previous owner in North Carolina. The car has been refinished in Dark Red over beige MB-Tex, and it is powered by a 4.5-liter M117 V8 mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. Additional equipment includes chrome bumpers and trim, 14″ slotted alloy wheels, wood trim, an automatic antenna, power windows and locks, air conditioning, and a Becker Europa AM/FM radio.
The car was refinished in its factory Dark Red (542) with the windows removed in 2018. The nose panel and other rust spots on the body were reportedly removed and replaced with patch panels prior to the respray. Equipment includes a sunroof, chrome bumpers and trim, a mesh grille, side moldings, an automatic antenna, and polished exhaust finishers.
Silver-finished 14″ slotted alloy wheels wear 205/70 Westlake Radial RP18 tires showing date codes from 2018. The car is equipped with four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. The brake fluid was serviced and the front pads and rear rotors were replaced in 2018.
The seats are upholstered in beige MB-Tex and are contrasted by a black dashboard and burgundy carpets. Interior appointments include wood trim and accents, power windows and door locks, cruise control, air conditioning, Coco-style floor mats, aftermarket speakers, and a Becker Europa II AM/FM radio. The air conditioning system has been converted to use R134a refrigerant, and the weatherstripping and carpets were replaced under previous ownership.
The steering wheel wears an aftermarket wrap and frames VDO instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer and a combination gauge displaying coolant temperature, fuel level, and oil pressure. An aftermarket tachometer has been installed in place of the removed clock. The five-digit odometer shows 96k miles.
The 4.5-liter V8 features Bosch fuel injection and has been fitted with a PerTronix electronic ignition system. Components reported to have been replaced during the refurbishment work completed in 2020 include:
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission. The rubber driveshaft coupler was replaced by the previous owner in August 2020.
