Description
When my father was 16, he wanted his own car. It was the summer of 1945, during World War II and cars, as well as money, were hard to find. My father found a car sitting under an oak tree in a field near his hometown. It had been sitting there for many years. He bought it for $5. It was a 1924 Buick model 33 Opera Coupe. But because of the war effort, aluminum was in high demand and someone had taken the top off the car pretty much by using an axe, to sell as aluminum scrap. So that poor Buick set with no top under an oak tree for many years gathering leaves and of course rainwater. There was a lot of rust on the metal parts but fortunately the wooden floor boards and wooden framework remained intact. The fenders were rusted through alongside the hood, and the running boards were shot. It had the 4 cylinder overhead valve engine but it was seized and he couldn't get it to run, and the brakes were all frozen so it was hard to move it. But with the help of some of his high school buddies, they dragged it home and then took it to his high school auto shop class. And over the course of the next 3 months he got that Buick to run. Ever since I can remember, Dad told me about all the adventures that he had with his high school friends. But his step-father sold the Buick and bought him a Model T. My Dad was not happy with the Model T, after all it didn't have a roller cam and overhead valves, a T just didn't have near the power and also didn't have front brakes like the Buick did. I heard those stories for many many years. In 2018, I was looking at some advertisements for old cars online and I ran across a 1924 Buick Opera Coupe for sale. I showed the pictures to my dad. And boy did his face light up he looked at that car and all the photos and said "How much does he want for it?", and I told him and he bought it. He had tears in his eyes as he backed it out of the trailer. He was only able to drive it once before he died.
