Description
This 1929 Rolls-Royce Twenty is clothed in wood-bodied shooting brake coachwork and is said to have spent time in Bristol, England, before being purchased by the seller’s father in San Jose, California, in 1977. Chassis GEN36 subsequently underwent an eight-year refurbishment by the seller’s father that included repairs to the wood and aluminum bodywork, a repaint in white and cream, a re-trim of the interior in tan leather, and overhauls of the 3,127cc inline-six and four-speed manual transmission. After making chassis-only appearances at the 2005 Hillsborough and Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance events partway through the project, the refurbished car debuted in complete form at the 2009 Hillsborough Concours d’Elegance before earning awards at numerous shows over the next 16 years. Additional features include a side-draft carburetor, mechanically actuated four-wheel drum brakes with servo assistance, 20” painted wire wheels, dual side-mount spares, a sliding sunroof, and two bench seats upholstered in tan leather. This Twenty shooting brake is now offered with a photo diary of the 2001-2008 refurbishment, awards and memorabilia from various shows and events, and a clean California title in the seller’s name. Introduced in October 1922, the Twenty platform served as a smaller and more affordable offering alongside the flagship Silver Ghost and Phantom models. Designed with owner-drivers in mind rather than as chauffeur-dependent transportation, the Twenty rode on a 128.9” wheelbase and carried bodywork in a variety of configurations from a choice of coachbuilders. This example wears shooting brake coachwork of unknown origin featuring exterior oak wood framing around interior wood framework and aluminum panels.
