Description
This custom 1942 Redwood Log Camper was handcrafted beginning in 1942 by Maxwell Kitson from a single giant redwood estimated to be approximately 980 years old. According to the documented history accompanying the structure, the tree was removed after forestry officials determined it had become unstable and posed a risk to surrounding younger giant redwoods. Rather than being cut into lumber, a 33-foot section measuring about 8 feet in diameter and weighing approximately 12 tons was preserved and transformed over nearly a two-year period into a fully furnished mobile home. Unlike traditional log cabins constructed from multiple logs, this structure was carved from a single giant redwood log. The completed interior includes a bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom, along with original handcrafted redwood cabinetry and built-in furnishings. The Redwood Log Camper was originally created as a traveling attraction that allowed visitors to experience the interior of a giant redwood from within. Included with the Redwood Log Camper are original period construction photographs showing the hollow log during construction and the early stages of its transformation, providing documented provenance for the project. The Redwood Log Camper has been submitted as a candidate for Guinness World Records based on its construction from a single giant redwood log. The unique camper's trailer is included in the sale.
