Vehicle Description 1949 Packard Standard 8 $13,000 Gateway Classic Cars of Dallas is excited to offer this beautifully presented 1949 Packard Standard Eight, a wonderful example of the postwar American luxury automobile that helped establish Packard as one of the most respected names in the industry. With its unmistakable Packard styling, elegant Ivory exterior, beautifully appointed interior, and legendary inline-eight power, this Packard delivers the kind of presence that simply cannot be duplicated by a modern automobile. The first thing that grabs your attention is the unmistakable Packard front end. The prominent vertical grille, sweeping fenders, rounded hood, distinctive hood ornament, substantial chrome bumpers, and flowing body lines give this sedan an unmistakable 1940s luxury-car presence. Finished in a soft Ivory/cream color, the body has a sophisticated period-correct appearance that suits the Packard design perfectly. The long, sweeping side trim visually emphasizes the car's length, while the large rounded fenders and low roofline give it the stately proportions that made Packard automobiles so desirable in their day. The chrome presentation is another major part of this Packard's appeal. From the massive front bumper and grille to the bright side trim, window surrounds, hood ornament, hubcaps, and exterior hardware, there is no mistaking this automobile for anything other than a genuine vintage Packard. The period-correct Packard wheel covers and whitewall-style presentation complete the classic luxury-car look. Inside, the Packard continues its elegant theme with a beautifully styled period dashboard featuring rich wood-grain trim, a full complement of original-style instrumentation, a large steering wheel, a column-mounted shifter, and classic Packard controls. The broad front bench seat and spacious cabin provide the kind of interior room that was expected from a full-size American luxury automobile of the era. The light-colored upholstery contrasts beautifully with the darker dashboard and wood-grain appointments, creating an exceptionally attractive vintage interior. And underneath that long Packard hood is one of the most important features of the car: Packard's legendary L-head inline-eight. The Standard Eight was powered by Packard's 288-cubic-inch L-head straight-eight, an engine that produced approximately 130 horsepower in the 1949 specification. The engine uses a 3½-inch bore and 3¾-inch stroke, a 7.0:1 compression ratio, and a five-main-bearing crankshaft. Rather than chasing high-revving horsepower, Packard engineered this engine around smoothness, durability, and effortless low-speed torque - exactly what buyers expected from a premium automobile in this era. That smooth eight-cylinder powerplant is paired with Packard's three-speed manual transmission with synchronized shifting, giving the driver a genuine old-school mechanical connection to the automobile. The Packard operating specifications identify the Standard Eight's transmission as a selective, synchronized three-speed manual. Overdrive was also available for buyers who wanted more relaxed highway cruising, but the standard transmission was the three-speed manual. The combination of the straight-eight and three-speed makes this Packard particularly enjoyable for someone who appreciates the authentic driving experience of a postwar American automobile. It isn't simply a car styled like a 1940s automobile - it delivers the mechanical character that made these cars special. Packard also engineered the Standard Eight with a sophisticated chassis for its time. The car rides on a 120-inch wheelbase and utilizes independent front suspension with coil springs, giving the big sedan a remarkably composed ride for a vehicle of its era. The Packard engineering philosophy was centered around smooth, quiet, and comfortable transportation, and the Standard Eight was an important part of that tradition. The Standard Eight represented Packard's more accessible eight-cylinder offering while retaining the engineering, styling and prestige associated with the Packard name. Above it in the 1949 range were the larger-displacement Super Eight and Custom Eight models, making the Standard Eight an excellent entry point into genuine Packard ownership while still giving you the legendary Packard straight-eight experience. This is the kind of automobile that draws attention from across a parking lot. The combination of the creamy exterior, extensive brightwork, classic Packard grille, sweeping fenders, elegant interior, and straight-eight power makes it a standout for local cruising, classic-car events, parades, weekend drives, or simply adding something truly distinctive to the collection. The 1949 Packard Standard Eight represents an important period in American automotive history - a time when luxury meant substantial proportions, beautifully crafted interiors, enormous chrome, smooth eight-cylinder engines, and a driving experience designed around comfort rather than outright speed. This Packard captures that era beautifully and gives its next owner the opportunity to own a genuine piece of Packard history. If you're looking for something beyond the typical Ford or Chevrolet of the late 1940s, this Packard deserves a serious look. The unmistakable styling, authentic Packard engineering, straight-eight power, and beautifully presented interior give it a personality all its own.
