Description
Volkswagen’s Type 2 was conceived as a versatile commercial counterpart to the Type 1 Beetle, spawning a wide range of passenger and utility configurations that would become among the marque’s most recognizable designs. Among the most distinctive was the Single Cab Pickup, combining the Type 2’s iconic split-window cab with a practical drop-side cargo bed and pass-through storage compartment below. This 1961 Volkswagen Type 2 Single Cab Pickup is finished in Dove Blue over a restored interior and has remained with the same owner since approximately 2000. Power comes from a 1,600cc air-cooled flat-four paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. Refinished around the beginning of the current owner’s 26-year stewardship and maintained for regular use, this charming early Type 2 is now being offered for auction in Florida.
The bodywork was refinished in classic Dove Blue around 2000 and is reported to present well overall, with a handful of minor areas having recently received cosmetic touch-ups. The Single Cab configuration incorporates a split windshield and a large cargo bed with fold-down gates along both sides as well as at the rear, allowing the bed to be easily accessed from three directions. Beneath the load floor is Volkswagen’s clever transverse “treasure chest” storage compartment, which spans the width of the truck and provides additional enclosed cargo space accessible from the sides. Additional exterior details include body-color steel wheels with chrome hubcaps, round headlights, dual side mirrors, and contrasting white bumpers.
