Description
1964 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe Beautifully restored, exceptionally well-documented, and retaining its Volkswagen-confirmed original engine, this 1964 Karmann Ghia is a special example of one of Volkswagen's most iconic designs. Built at Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany, on July 1, 1964, this Ghia comes with a certificate from Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen documenting its original configuration. It was built as a U.S.-market Type 143 Coupe and finished in L560 Manila Yellow, equipped with the 34-horsepower 1.2-liter engine, 4-speed manual transmission, whitewall tires, an additional right-side convex mirror, and U.S.-market equipment. The car left the factory on July 4, 1964, destined for New Orleans. Most importantly, it retains its original engine. Volkswagen's historical archive specifically confirms engine #8753618 as the engine originally installed with chassis #6426258. We have personally verified and photographed both numbers on the car, and both match the accompanying Volkswagen documentation. According to its archived 2018 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale listing, the Ghia underwent a complete nut-and-bolt restoration with an emphasis on refurbishing and retaining original components. Barrett-Jackson described the car as a multiple-award-winning example originating from a Texas chassis that had previously been stored indoors for more than 16 years. As part of the restoration, its original engine was rebuilt to 1,285cc, the 4-speed transmission was overhauled, the braking system was refurbished, and the rubber components were replaced. The listing also notes retention of the original interior chrome accents and a period Bendix Sapphire push-button radio. The Chocolate Brown upholstery was described in the Barrett-Jackson documentation as a dealer color option and was stitched in the original style. It provides a beautiful contrast against the factory-correct Manila Yellow exterior. The restoration has held up exceptionally well. The paint remains beautiful with only minor imperfections from age, the brightwork presents extremely well, and the interior and engine compartment show the same level of care. The underside presents cleanly with solid-appearing floor pans and chassis components, and detailed underside photographs are included in our gallery. Following its 2018 Barrett-Jackson sale, the car spent the next eight years in a private collection and is now being offered from that estate. Documentation accompanying the car includes its Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen factory certificate, separate Volkswagen original-engine verification letter, and 2018 Barrett-Jackson purchase documentation. For the collector looking beyond simply finding a pretty Karmann Ghia, this one checks some particularly important boxes: factory color, documented identity, confirmed original engine, high-quality restoration, known Barrett-Jackson history, and excellent supporting documentation.
