1965 Shelby Cobra 289

Vehicle Description 1965 Shelby Cobra $1,290,000 Offered for sale is CSX 2439, an authentic, factory-built 1965 Shelby Cobra 289 produced by Shelby American during the final and most refined phase of original 289 Cobra production. This is a true period Cobra, built in the 1960s as part of Shelby American’s original production run, and not a continuation, recreation, or tribute. Importantly, the car retains its original, factory-installed, matching-numbers drivetrain, a distinction that places it among a very small and highly desirable group of surviving Cobras. The CSX chassis sequence traces its roots directly back to CSX 2000, the first Shelby Cobra and the car that launched Carroll Shelby’s vision of combining a lightweight British chassis with American V-8 power. The 289-powered Cobra became the purest and most successful expression of that idea, forming the foundation of Shelby American’s early international racing achievements. CSX 2439 sits squarely within this original lineage and represents the fully matured execution of the Cobra concept.By 1965, the 289 Cobra platform had benefited from years of development, competition experience, and continuous refinement. Late-production examples such as CSX 2439 feature fully developed chassis geometry, proven and durable drivetrain combinations, improved cooling and braking systems, and a level of build consistency informed by extensive racing use. As a result, these late 289 Cobras are widely regarded as the most refined and desirable of the original series. While the later 427 Cobra is often associated with raw horsepower, many enthusiasts and collectors consider the 289 Cobra to be the purist’s Cobra. Its lighter weight, narrower track, and superior balance deliver a more agile, communicative driving experience that remains unmatched. With an approximate curb weight of just 2,000 pounds and an exceptional power-to-weight ratio, the 289 Cobra offers precise steering, predictable handling, and a closer adherence to Carroll Shelby’s original design intent. CSX 2439 exemplifies these qualities, delivering the balanced and visceral performance that defined the Cobra’s reputation. The retention of its original engine, transmission, and rear axle is particularly significant. During the Cobra’s active years, many examples lost their original drivetrains due to racing use, mechanical failure, or period performance upgrades. As a result, original 289 CSX cars with complete mechanical continuity are exceptionally scarce. This originality enhances CSX 2439’s historical integrity, increases its desirability among advanced collectors, strengthens its concours and judging potential, and contributes to long-term market stability.CSX 2439 presents today as a properly preserved and correctly maintained original Cobra, reflecting knowledgeable stewardship and respect for its historical significance. It has not been over-restored or excessively modernized, retaining the authenticity that is increasingly valued by top-level collectors. As such, it is well suited for a variety of uses, including driving and touring, concours display, historic events, Shelby-focused gatherings, and long-term collection or investment.Approximately 580 original 289 Cobras were produced between 1962 and 1965. Only a small percentage survive today with correct configuration, documented provenance, and a matching-numbers drivetrain. CSX 2439 occupies this increasingly narrow and highly desirable subset, representing an exceptional opportunity to acquire one of the finest expressions of Shelby American’s original Cobra legacy.Engine: Original Ford 289 cu-in V-8 (matching numbers)Horsepower: Period-rated approx. 271–306 hp (configuration dependent)Induction: Period-correct carburetionTransmission: Original matching-numbers manual gearboxRear Axle: Original matching-numbers differentialChassis: Original CSX tubular steel frame (289 specification)Suspension: Independent front and rearBrakes: Four-wheel discSteering: Rack and pinionExhaust: Side-exit exhaustBody: Hand-formed aluminum(Detailed drivetrain stampings and supporting documentation available to qualified buyers.)
