Description
This 1966 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R "Flying Mustang" re-creation is a tribute to the GT350R prototype driven by Ken Miles, which became airborne during a race at Green Valley Raceway in Texas on Valentine’s Day 1965, earning it the enduring nickname "The Flying Mustang." It is powered by a 289ci V-8 engine bored to 302ci, equipped with a Carter AFB 625-cfm four-barrel carburetor, R-Model carburetor plenum with hold-down bracket, Cobra valve covers, Cobra oil pan and Ford Motorsports billet distributor, paired with a Toploader four-speed manual transmission. Additional drivetrain equipment includes a Currie Enterprises 9-inch rear end, aluminum performance radiator, long-tube headers and side-exit exhaust. The suspension features coilover shocks, hydraulic rack-and-pinion power steering and Shelby four-wheel disc brakes with drilled, slotted and vented rotors, complemented by a front brake cooling system. This street-legal fastback underwent an extensive three-year rotisserie restoration incorporating Shelby GT350R competition specifications. The exterior is finished in Wimbledon White with painted Guardsman Blue stripes and features a Shelby hood, GT350R-style front apron and rear valance, R-Model stainless-steel hood and trunk latches, Terlingua Racing Team decals and American Racing Torq Thrust D wheels. Additional R-Model details include a Plexiglas fastback rear window produced from an original mold, fiberglass rear package tray, spare-tire mount and competition-style trunk fuel filler with a locking mechanism. The interior features leather Shelby racing bucket seats, a leather Shelby steering wheel, AutoMeter gauges, tilt steering column, roll bar with four-point harnesses and a cockpit-mounted fire extinguisher. Competition-inspired modifications include heater, radio, and rear-seat and quarter-window deletes. A 12-volt Interstate battery is relocated to the trunk. This car has been driven 539 miles since completion of the restoration.
