Description
Introduced for 1968 as Dodge’s answer to the Plymouth Road Runner, the Super Bee combined stripped-down muscle-car character with some of Chrysler’s most formidable powertrains, with the 440 Six Pack joining the lineup for the second half of 1965. This 1970 Dodge Coronet Super Bee is a desirable V-Code example, one of a reported 1,072 440-powered hardtops produced for the model year. Originally built at Chrysler’s Lynch Road Assembly Plant in Detroit, it is finished in its trim-tag-correct Dark Burnt Orange Metallic over a matching Dark Burnt Orange vinyl bucket-seat interior and features a rare Gator Grain vinyl roof. In place of its original engine, the car is powered by a professionally built 496ci stroker V8 based on a 440 block and backed by a built 727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission. Accompanied by a Galen’s Registry report, broadcast sheet, and a three-ring binder containing extensive receipts, this striking V-Code Super Bee is now being offered for auction in Massachusetts.
The body was refinished in its correct Dark Burnt Orange Metallic (FK5) paint approximately four years ago and is said to remain in excellent overall condition. Signature Super Bee details include a 440 Six Pack power-bulge hood, quad headlights, chrome bumpers, a contrasting white rear tail stripe, and Super Bee badging. A black Gator Grain vinyl roof further distinguishes the exterior, while a passenger-side mirror was added for a symmetrical appearance. The car rides on 15” steel wheels with bright trim rings wrapped in Cooper Cobra Radial G/T tires measuring 225/70 up front and 275/60 at the rear. The underside has also been coated for added protection.
