Description
This 1970 Lotus 70 Formula 5000 race car is powered by a Chevrolet V8 engine paired with a five-speed Hewland manual transmission. Identified as F5/001, this fully restored single-seat competition car was designed by Martin Waide during the Colin Chapman era of Lotus racing. Its Chevrolet V8 engine features four Weber 48 IDA carburetors that underwent specialist restoration in 2025, including replacement of internal components, throttle hardware and associated parts. Additional mechanical attention included clutch and gearbox servicing, ignition-system inspection and installation of an Odyssey racing battery. The Lotus features a lightweight racing chassis, low wedge-shaped bodywork, exposed wheels and a prominent high-mounted rear wing. Its exterior is finished in period-style Castrol racing livery and features an open single-seat cockpit. A lower rear wing and spare wheels accompany the car. The vehicle's documented European ownership history includes British racing-car dealer Roger Cowman and Munich-based enthusiast Helmut Dango, who acquired the Lotus in 1993. An FIA Historic Vehicle Identity Form was reportedly issued in April 1994, and the car subsequently participated in European historic Formula 5000 events associated with the Force F5000 Transatlantic Challenge. Its documented historic-racing appearances include Spa in 1996 and Silverstone in 2000, with historic identity paperwork reportedly carrying event stamps through 2002. In 2005, the Lotus entered the collection of Dutch Lotus collector Olav Glasius. Following damage sustained during a 2010 demonstration event in Rotterdam, the car underwent an extensive restoration from 2019-23 under historic Lotus racing specialist Peter Denty in Norfolk, England. Following this restoration, the Lotus received additional mechanical attention from ArrowLane, LLC, a Scottsdale, Arizona-based specialist in historic and vintage racing cars. Documented work during 2025 and 2026 included restoration of the four Weber carburetors, clutch and gearbox servicing, electrical-system inspection, fuel-system research and engine diagnostics. The car is now fully restored and running. Accompanying documentation records its European historic-racing participation, ownership history, specialist restoration and subsequent mechanical work.
