Description
This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL remained under long-term ownership from 1995 until it was sold on BaT in December 2020 , and it was the subject of a $156k refurbishment in Southern California before it was acquired by the current owner in 2025. Work during the refurbishment consisted of dismantling the car, stripping the body to bare metal, a repaint in Moss Green Metallic, re-trimming the interior in Cognac leather, replacing the wiring harness, and overhauling the 2.8-liter inline-six, subframe, brakes, suspension, and more. Equipment includes a four-speed automatic transmission, a green convertible top, a removable hardtop, power steering, 14″ steel wheels with painted covers, a Becker Europa AM/FM radio, and air conditioning. This W113 SL is now offered by the seller on behalf of the owner in California with refurbishment photos and invoices as well as a Montana title in the name of the owner’s LLC. The W113 SL was designed by Friedrich Geiger, Béla Barényi, and Paul Bracq and was introduced to the public at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show. Previously refinished in white, this example was disassembled, and the body was stripped to bare metal and repaired before it was refinished in the current shade of Moss Green Metallic Glasurit paint. The exterior chrome was re-plated and a replacement green fabric soft top and weather seals were installed during reassembly. Additional appointments include a removable hardtop, a retractable antenna, dual side mirrors, a rear luggage rack, and European-specification headlights.
