1971 Volkswagen Transporter

1971 Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter (Bay Window) German-Built Rebuilt 1600cc Engine 4-Speed Manual Clean California Title California Blue Plate Bus Some vehicles simply get you from one destination to another. Others become symbols of an era. The Volkswagen Type 2 is one of those rare automobiles whose influence extends far beyond transportation. Whether remembered as the ultimate beach cruiser, weekend camper, family adventure vehicle, or cultural icon, the Bay Window Bus remains one of the most beloved classics ever produced. Offered here is a 1971 Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter, proudly built in Germany and presented as an honest, mechanically sorted driver with the character and personality that enthusiasts have cherished for generations. The 1971 model year occupies a special place in Volkswagen history. It combines the classic styling of the early Bay Window buses with one of the most significant mechanical upgrades of the generation: factory front disc brakes, providing improved stopping performance while preserving the unmistakable vintage driving experience. Power comes from the legendary 1600cc air-cooled flat-four engine, paired with the desirable original-style 4-speed manual transmission. According to the owner, the engine was professionally rebuilt by a Volkswagen specialist in Portland during his ownership and has accumulated less than 30,000 miles since the rebuild. The owner reports the Bus runs exceptionally well, starts easily, and delivers the dependable, engaging driving experience that made these air-cooled Volkswagens famous around the world. Further enhancing its drivability, the Transporter has received a complete brake system overhaul with new brakes all around, giving its next caretaker added confidence whether cruising local backroads or embarking on weekend adventures. The odometer currently displays 42,727 miles. Due to the vehicle s age, total vehicle mileage is represented as shown on the odometer. The owner states the rebuilt engine has traveled fewer than 30,000 miles since completion. Inside, the cabin has been thoughtfully configured for comfort and practicality. Lincoln front seats provide significantly improved comfort over the factory seating, making long-distance trips far more enjoyable. A Pioneer AM/FM CD stereo with integrated speakers offers modern audio while preserving the Bus s classic personality. The rear cargo area is versatile enough to accommodate a futon or camping setup, making it an ideal companion for weekend getaways, music festivals, beach trips, or scenic road adventures. Additional storage beneath the rear platform adds to its practicality. This Bus also features several tasteful upgrades, including a custom front grille/brush guard, custom interior panels, and retains its original steering wheel. The roof presents well, and the vehicle proudly wears California Blue Plates, a feature many collectors appreciate. Most importantly, this Volkswagen has been represented honestly. It is not being advertised as a freshly restored showpiece, but rather as an honest driver-quality Bay Window that has been mechanically cared for and enjoyed. The body exhibits cosmetic imperfections consistent with its age, including evidence of previous body repairs, localized rust, and paint bubbling in several areas. These imperfections have been thoroughly photographed and disclosed to provide prospective buyers with a transparent understanding of the vehicle s condition. We firmly believe that honest representation builds buyer confidence, and we encourage independent inspections. The current owner is parting with the Bus only to help finance the completion of his master s degree. He shared: The only reason I m selling it is to pay for my master s degree and finish school. I hate to see it go. This is a classic gem. Whoever buys this bus will own a historical treasure. I hope it finds a wonderful home and goes on many more groovy adventures. It s always refreshing to find a classic that has been enjoyed, maintained, and is being sold to support an exciting new chapter in its owner s life.
