Launched as a brand-new model line for 1973, "Type LT" stood for "Luxury Touring". It was introduced by Chevrolet to court buyers who loved the sleek, European-inspired styling of the second-generation Camaro but demanded a more refined, quiet, and comfortable driving experience. The Evolution: Luxury Meets Muscle By 1973, American automakers were facing immense regulatory headwinds, including tightening emissions standards, rising insurance surcharges for high-performance cars, and looming federal bumper safety mandates. In response, Chevrolet discontinued the legendary Super Sport (SS) package for the Camaro and filled the void with the Type LT. Instead of advertising raw tire-shredding horsepower, General Motors marketed the Type LT to drivers who wanted "luxury and sporty handling all in the same car, like in the great European touring cars". Premium Features of the Type LT The Type LT was an upscale, standalone package that came loaded with premium standard features designed to isolate passengers from road noise and vibrations: Plush Interior: It featured high-back, full-foam molded bucket seats, extra-thick sound-deadening insulation, deep-pile carpeting, and deluxe door panels. Cabin Styling: The dashboard and center console were trimmed with upscale faux-woodgrain accents. Unlike base models, it came standard with full instrumentation, including a tachometer and a clock. Exterior Touches: On the outside, it featured dual sport "bullet" mirrors, hidden windshield wipers, unique Type LT badging, and bright chrome trim surrounding the windows. Mechanical Upgrades: It came standard with a V8 engine, variable-ratio power steering, and power front disc brakes for effortless cruising. The "Secret" Z28 Option One of the most fascinating chapters of the 1973 Type LT story is how it interacted with other Camaro performance packages. Buyers could actually order a Type LT with the Z28 performance package or the split-bumper Rally Sport (RS) package—creating the ultimate grand touring machine. However, GM rules dictated that if you ordered a Type LT Z28, the luxury trim took visual precedence. The car was built without any exterior Z28 badging, stripes, or callouts; it only wore the standard "Type LT" emblems. This created a legendary "sleeper" muscle car that offered a quiet, premium interior paired secretly with the high-revving 245-horsepower Z28 350ci V8 underneath the hood. It was the final year of the iconic chrome split-bumper design on the RS package before heavy, federally mandated aluminum bumpers took over for 1974. A Resounding Success: The gamble paid off perfectly for Chevrolet. The Type LT was incredibly popular, helping the Camaro line maintain strong sales numbers even as the pure muscle market collapsed around it. Ultimately, the 1973 Chevrolet Camaro Type LT proved that performance and comfort didn't have to be mutually exclusive, setting the tone for the personal luxury coupe boom that dominated the rest of the 1970s.
