Introduced as GMC’s upscale counterpart to the Chevrolet K5 Blazer, the 1976 GMC Jimmy satisfied America’s growing demand for full-size sport utility vehicles.
Built on General Motors’ rugged square-body truck platform, the Jimmy combined full-size comfort, open-air versatility, and four-wheel-drive capability. The result was a truck that could work hard during the week, then effortlessly go off-road on the weekend.
For 1976, buyers could choose engines like the formidable 400ci V8, renowned for its abundant low-end torque. That V8 was paired with solid axles and a dual-range transfer case, giving the Jimmy strong pulling power for towing, climbing steep grades, or navigating rough trails. And its well-appointed interior — especially in uplevel High Sierra form — and removable rear roof section added comfort and open-air versatility.
