Description
This 1977 Volkswagen Type 2 Krankenwagen is a factory-built German Red Cross ambulance that served in Birkenau, Germany from June 1977 through September 1996. A true piece of European emergency service history, the bus was purpose-built for medical transport and retains its original configuration and specialized equipment.
Imported to the United States in 1997, the vehicle spent time in California and Wyoming before being acquired by the current owner in 2021. Showing approximately 57,000 kilometers (~36,000 miles, TMU), this example presents as a well-preserved and highly original ambulance conversion.
Finished in beige with German Red Cross markings over a gray vinyl interior, the bus is powered by a 1.6-liter flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. It remains equipped with period-correct emergency and communication equipment, including roof-mounted lights, sirens, CB radio, and a car phone.
