1978 GMC C/K 1500 Series

Vehicle Description 1978 GMC C/K 1500 Series $49,997 1978 GMC K1500 Sierra Grande — LS-Swapped, Lifted Long Bed 4x4 Why This Car Is Special The 1978 GMC K1500 occupies an interesting place in truck history. By 1973, GM had introduced the second generation of its full-size pickup platform — what collectors now call the 'Square Body' generation — and it would run through 1987, making it one of the longest-produced truck designs in American history. The K prefix in K1500 tells you everything about what this truck was built for: K designated four-wheel drive, while C was used for two-wheel-drive models. The 1500 suffix indicated half-ton payload capacity. These trucks were built on a separate body-on-frame platform with a front solid axle, leaf springs all around, and a transfer case for low-range off-road use — a straightforward, proven system that has aged well. What separates this particular 1978 GMC K1500 from a stock survivor is the quality and intent behind the modifications. The interior trim badge on this truck reads Sierra Grande, which was GMC's mid-to-upper trim level for 1978, sitting above the base Sierra and offering more interior refinement including the wood grain dash trim you still see in place today. Someone who owned this truck before took the Square Body foundation seriously and invested in a powertrain that matches the truck's stance and purpose: a GM Vortec LS V8 mated to a 4L80-E automatic transmission, backed up by a lift kit, 37-inch mud tires, and professional-grade PPG paint in a period-appropriate orange. This is a truck that has been built to be driven, not trailered. The VIN on this truck confirms it was assembled as a K-series (four-wheel drive) half-ton long bed — exactly what the current configuration reflects. Nothing about the build contradicts what the truck left the factory as, which matters for title, registration, and insurance purposes. The LS architecture is one of the most swap-friendly platforms ever produced, and the Square Body GMC is one of the most popular recipients for exactly that reason — the engine bay is wide, the firewall is relatively flat, and the chassis is robust enough to handle the power increase without drama. Paired with a GM 4L80-E four-speed automatic overdrive transmission, this combination gives the 1978 GMC K1500 a significant reliability and performance advantage over any original drivetrain. The 4L80-E is a heavy-duty unit — GM used it behind diesel engines and high-output gasoline motors in HD applications through the 2000s — so it is well matched to a lifted truck running large mud tires. The exhaust system starts with stainless headers, which improve flow compared to cast iron factory manifolds and resist cracking over time. From there, the system runs dual pipes back through a pair of Flowmaster mufflers. Flowmaster's chambered design produces a distinctive tone that is audible without being intrusive — a reasonable choice for a truck that also has air conditioning and is clearly expected to spend time on the street. Cooling is handled by an aluminum radiator, which transfers heat more efficiently than the stock co
