1981 Volkswagen Rabbit

Vehicle Description 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit $11,000 Gateway Classic Cars is proud to present this 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit Convertible, a charming and increasingly collectible example of Volkswagen's iconic Mk1 open-air compact. Combining simple German engineering, lightweight front-wheel-drive performance, and classic convertible styling, this Rabbit offers a fun and nostalgic driving experience that is becoming increasingly difficult to find in this condition. Finished in a distinctive deep red exterior, this Rabbit Convertible showcases the clean, boxy styling that made the original Rabbit such a recognizable part of the automotive landscape. The squared-off body, simple grille, round headlights, chrome accents, and classic convertible profile give this Volkswagen an unmistakable early-1980s appearance. Under the hood is Volkswagen's 1.7-liter four-cylinder engine, producing approximately 74 horsepower and 90 lb-ft of torque in North American specification. Paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, this lightweight Volkswagen delivers an engaging driving experience that emphasizes simplicity, efficiency, and driver involvement. The 5-speed manual is particularly well suited to the Rabbit's compact dimensions and modest power output, allowing the driver to make the most of the four-cylinder engine while enjoying the mechanical feel that makes vintage Volkswagens so entertaining. With front-wheel drive and a relatively light curb weight, the Rabbit is nimble and easy to maneuver, making it an ideal car for leisurely weekend cruising. Inside, the black interior provides a clean contrast to the exterior and maintains the straightforward, functional character that defined Volkswagen interiors of the era. The open-air cabin gives this Rabbit an entirely different personality with the top lowered, making it especially enjoyable for summer cruising and local car shows. The Rabbit Convertible was produced as Volkswagen's open-air counterpart to the Rabbit hatchback, with the convertible bodywork developed by Karmann. In North America, the 1981 model received the updated 1.7-liter engine and was available with the 5-speed manual transmission. Today, clean Mk1 Rabbit Convertibles are becoming increasingly uncommon. Many examples were used as inexpensive daily transportation for decades, while others were modified, neglected, or simply succumbed to rust. That makes a well-presented example like this an appealing choice for Volkswagen enthusiasts and collectors of distinctive 1980s automobiles. Whether you're looking for a fun weekend cruiser, a nostalgic addition to your collection, or simply a unique convertible that stands apart from the usual classics, this 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit Convertible offers plenty of charm and personality.
