1986 Buick LeSabre

1986 Buick LeSabre * Factory 1 of 117 Grand National Option * Only 34,339 Miles This 1986 Buick LeSabre Grand National is one of the rarest and most obscure pieces of 1980s American automotive history—a fascinating blend of NASCAR inspiration, Buick ingenuity, and a touch of marketing mischief. With an estimated production of only 112 to 117 units, the LeSabre GN stands as a unicorn among Grand Nationals, far removed from its rear-wheel-drive, turbocharged Regal sibling, and produced for just one model year only. This example is even more unique, as the build sheet confirms it was ordered with the GN option (RPO WE2) and designated as a Daytona Parade Car, a nod to Buick's involvement in NASCAR during the mid-1980s. With only 34,339 original miles and just two owners since new, this front-wheel-drive oddity remains in excellent condition throughout. The clean Carfax confirms the mileage is accurate and includes documented service history, underscoring the care and preservation this vehicle has received over nearly four decades. Under the hood is the reliable 3.8L V6 non-turbo engine, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission—a durable, smooth drivetrain consistent with Buick's reputation for comfort and refinement in the era. While the LeSabre Grand National was primarily an appearance package, it's a striking one: blacked-out trim, body-color bumpers, and GN badging give the car a stealthy and aggressive look uncommon for full-size sedans of the time. This car received one professional repaint due to common clear coat peel, and it now presents beautifully in its correct finish, capturing the sinister styling that sets it apart from any other LeSabre on the road. The car rides on its original wheels and comes complete with original Grand National floor mats, retaining key visual details that authenticate its rare pedigree. Inside, the cabin is clean and well-kept, with all the amenities expected of a full-size Buick. The factory air conditioning blows cold, having been retrofitted to R134A, and the original dealer paperwork is included, along with the Florida temporary tag, original key chain, and purchase contract, offering exceptional provenance and historical value. The factory radio is temperamental—sometimes functioning, sometimes not—which may require minor repair, but otherwise, the interior electronics and systems are in working order. Included with the car is a custom show board, making it ready for display at local cruise nights, Cars & Coffee events, or even regional concours where rarity and originality are valued. Would you believe a front-wheel-drive NASCAR racer? In 1986, the ever-evolving rules of stock car racing allowed Buick to stretch the definition just enough to badge this special edition and parade it in Daytona, playing into its motorsport marketing while offering something truly unique for the showroom. It may not have a turbo, but the LeSabre Grand National is every bit as intriguing—a conversation starter, a collector's dream, and a guaranteed one-of-one at your next car show. With its rarity, documented history, low mileage, and strong originality, this 1986 Buick LeSabre Grand National is more than just a car—it's a survivor from one of the most unusual chapters in Buick performance lore.
