1986 Buick Lingenfelter SEMA Build

1986 Buick Grand National, Lingenfelter / Royal Purple SEMA BuildThis 1986 Buick Grand National is not your average black Buick, this is one of those cars that has a real story behind it. Grand Nationals are already legends on their own, but this one takes things to another level with a documented Lingenfelter Performance Engineering build, a Royal Purple connection, SEMA history, TV exposure, and a serious performance setup built around Buick's iconic turbo V6 platform. From the outside, it still has the look that made the Grand National famous: black paint, sinister stance, two-door coupe body, and that unmistakable 'don't mess with me' 1980s muscle attitude. These cars were feared when new, and this one keeps that same street presence, only now with far more bite underneath. The heart of the car is Buick's legendary 3.8L / 231ci turbocharged V6, modified by Lingenfelter Performance Engineering as part of a build commissioned for Royal Purple's performance marketing program. Per documented auction history, the car was represented as making 500+ horsepower, more than double the factory output. That figure should be viewed as the documented historical representation rather than a current dyno-certified number, but either way, this is clearly a very serious Grand National build.Backing the turbo V6 is an automatic transmission sending power to the rear wheels, just like a Grand National should. The chassis has been upgraded with RideTech suspension components, including RideTech StrongARM control arms and coilovers, giving the car a much more planted, performance-focused feel. Stopping power has also been heavily upgraded with a Baer four-wheel disc brake system featuring dark purple calipers, a perfect nod to the Royal Purple theme. The stance is finished off with forged Weld Racing wheels wrapped in ultra-high-performance tires, giving the car a tough, purposeful look without losing the Grand National's original attitude. Inside, the cabin has been upgraded with Recaro bucket seats, a full center console, auxiliary performance gauges, and additional instrumentation to monitor the important vitals. It still feels like a Grand National, but with the kind of equipment you'd expect in a car built to be shown, driven, and taken seriously. What really separates this car from the rest is the provenance. This Grand National was built by Lingenfelter for Royal Purple, displayed in the Royal Purple SEMA booth, featured on PowerNation TV, selected as a SEMA Golden Ticket winner, and later chosen to participate in the Optima Street Car Challenge / Ultimate Street Car competition. That is the kind of history you simply cannot add later, the car either has it or it doesn't.Key Highlights:1986 Buick Grand NationalGenuine WE2 Grand NationalBlack exterior with gray/black interiorBuilt by Lingenfelter Performance EngineeringCommissioned for Royal PurpleDisplayed at the Royal Purple SEMA boothFeatured on PowerNation TVSEMA Golden Ticket winnerSelected for Optima Street Car Challenge / Ultimate Street Car competition3.8L / 231ci turbocharged V6Lingenfelter performance modificationsPreviously represented in documented auction history as 500+ HPAutomatic transmissionRear-wheel driveRideTech suspension componentsRideTech StrongARM control armsRideTech coilover suspensionBaer four-wheel disc brakesDark purple brake calipersForged Weld Racing wheelsUltra-high-performance tiresRecaro bucket seatsFull center consoleAuxiliary performance gaugesAdditional instrumentationOverall, this 1986 Buick Grand National Lingenfelter / Royal Purple build is the kind of car that checks boxes most modified Grand Nationals simply can't. It has the look, the power, the right names attached to it, and the documented history to back it up. A real Grand National is already special, but one built by Lingenfelter, shown at SEMA for Royal Purple, featured on TV, and selected for performance competition is a completely different conversation. If you're looking for a Grand National with serious presence and a story that stands out, this is one you do not want to miss.
