Description
Produced from 1948 to 1990, the Citroën 2CV is among the most beloved and enduring economy cars ever built, celebrated for its minimalist, utilitarian design, roll-back canvas roof, and supple long-travel suspension. This 1988 example is a late-production 2CV finished in Vallelunga Red over black interior upholstery and powered by an air-cooled 602cc flat-twin paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. Acquired in 2022 by its current owner, a longtime Citroën collector, from the estate of a late Canadian Member of Parliament, it has since been maintained by a Citroën specialist and driven to club events. It is now being offered for auction in Canada.
Styled by Flaminio Bertoni and engineered by André Lefèbvre, the 2CV was conceived in the 1930s under Citroën's Pierre-Jules Boulanger to motorize rural France, built to a now-famous brief to carry four people and a basket of eggs across a plowed field without breaking them. The result was a featherweight body with a roll-back canvas roof and interconnected long-travel suspension. Finished in Vallelunga Red and resprayed around 2016, this 2CV retains its signature roll-back roof, round headlights, and minimalist bodywork. The seller describes the paint as very good, noting some rock chips on the bonnet that could be resprayed. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin presents red cloth-upholstered front and rear bench seating and reflects the 2CV's famously spartan design, with its lightweight seats and dash-mounted gearshift. Equipment includes a black-painted two-spoke steering wheel, minimalist door cards, and body-color surrounds. The seller states that all gauges and accessories function properly.
