Vehicle Description 1989 Jeep Wrangler $19,997 1989 Jeep Wrangler Laredo — Black over Tan, 4.2L Inline-Six, 5-Speed Manual, Clean Undercarriage Why This Car Is Special The 1989 Jeep Wrangler Laredo occupies a specific and increasingly valuable place in the YJ generation's history. The YJ ran from 1987 through 1995, and by 1989 Jeep had sorted out most of the early production wrinkles. The Laredo was the top trim level for most of the YJ's production run, positioned above the base S and the mid-grade Sport. It brought with it a longer list of comfort and convenience features that made it genuinely livable day-to-day, while the underlying hardware remained every bit as capable off-road as any other Wrangler of the era. The 4.2-liter AMC inline-six in this truck is worth discussing on its own. This engine — often called the 258 cubic inch six — dates back to the early 1970s and was used across a wide range of AMC and Jeep products. By the late 1980s it had been refined considerably, and Jeep enthusiasts had decades of experience building and maintaining it. It is one of the better-supported engines in the off-road community, with an enormous aftermarket parts base and a reputation for durability when properly maintained. It is also, notably, a carburetor-fed engine in this application rather than fuel-injected, which puts this 1989 Wrangler Laredo in the last group of Wranglers to use that setup before fuel injection became standard. The 4.0-liter fuel-injected version took over as the go-to powerplant as the YJ generation continued, but many old-school Jeep owners still prefer the simplicity and easy tuning of the 258. The VIN on this truck confirms it was built in Brampton, Ontario, Canada — the plant that produced Wranglers throughout the YJ run — and it decodes as a two-door 4x4 model, consistent with everything you see here. Clean, Laredo-trimmed YJs with solid undercarriages are becoming genuinely hard to find. Most have been modified beyond recognition, used hard off-road, or simply rusted away in northern climates. This one shows a clean undercarriage and has been outfitted with a tasteful set of appearance upgrades that work well against the black exterior. It is backed by a 5-speed manual transmission, which is the correct way to drive a vehicle like this. The combination gives the driver full control over gear selection in technical terrain, and the relatively long torque curve of the inline-six makes low-speed crawling manageable without a lot of fuss. Four-wheel drive is part-time, engaged via a floor-mounted transfer case lever. Braking is front disc and rear drum — a practical setup that was standard for the YJ and is well-supported with readily available replacement parts. Power steering and power brakes are both present, which the Laredo trim included as part of its comfort package. These were meaningful upgrades at the time; base YJs required considerably more effort to maneuver, especially at low speed. The undercarriage photos show a clean chassis. The frame, axles, and floor pans are free of the heavy corrosion and patch repairs that disqualify so many Wranglers from serious consideration. A skid plate is installed forward, offering pr
