1989 Lincoln Town Car Signature 4dr Sedan

Vehicle Description 1989 Lincoln Town Car $14,997 1989 Lincoln Town Car Signature Series — Burgundy on Burgundy, Presidential Vinyl Top, Clean Undercarriage Why This Car Is Special The 1989 Lincoln Town Car Signature Series represents the final years of one of the most successful luxury car platforms in American automotive history. Built on the Panther platform — a body-on-frame architecture that Ford first introduced for the Town Car in 1980 — the third generation of this design had reached full maturity by 1989. Lincoln had refined nearly every detail over the preceding decade, and by the time this car rolled off the Wixom, Michigan assembly line, the Town Car was the best-selling full-size luxury sedan in the United States. It was outselling the Cadillac DeVille, which was no small feat for a car that made no apologies for its traditional American luxury formula. The Signature Series sat in the middle of the Town Car trim hierarchy for 1989, above the base trim and below the Cartier edition. It was the volume seller of the lineup — the one most buyers actually chose — and it came loaded with the features that defined what American luxury meant in the late 1980s. This particular example wears a deep Burgundy exterior with a white Presidential vinyl top and a matching all-Burgundy leather interior, a color combination that was very much in keeping with the period's tastes and one that photographs exactly as it looked in Lincoln showrooms when new. The 10th character of the VIN decodes as K, confirming this is a 1989 model year build — not a late 1988 or early 1990, which matters to collectors who care about year-correct detail. The assembly plant code in the VIN identifies Wixom, which was Lincoln's dedicated facility in Michigan and the only place these cars were built during this era. What separates this car from the average survivor is the condition of the undercarriage. Put it on a lift, which we did, and you find solid, well-coated floors and frame rails with no serious rust intrusion. For a 35-year-old American car, that's the kind of underside that tells you this vehicle spent most of its life in a dry climate or a garage, or both. That's the detail that separates a presentable driver from a genuinely solid long-term ownership prospect. In the Town Car application, the 5.0 EFI produced around 150 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, numbers that aren't impressive on paper but feel entirely appropriate behind the wheel of a nearly 4,000-pound luxury barge. The engine's strength is in its low-rpm pull, which suits the Town Car's mission perfectly. Backing the V8 is Ford's AOD 4-speed automatic, a transmission that was a significant engineering development when it arrived in 1980. The AOD was the first automatic overdrive transmission Ford produced for passenger cars, and by 1989 it had been refined over nearly a decade of real-world use. The lockup torque converter and overdrive fourth gear gave the Town Car a meaningful highway fuel economy advantage over the older C6 automatics it replaced. Column-shift operation keeps the interior clean and traditional, consistent with what Town Car buyers expected. The braking setup uses front disc brakes with drums in
