Description
Representing the ultimate evolution of Maserati’s Biturbo platform, the Shamal was introduced in 1990 as a limited-production grand tourer combining dramatic Marcello Gandini styling with a twin-turbocharged V8 engine and a 6-speed manual transmission. Named after a powerful northwesterly wind in Mesopotamia, the Shamal was the final new Maserati model announced under Alejandro de Tomaso’s ownership, with just 369 examples produced through 1996. This 1992 Maserati Shamal is finished in red over black leather upholstery and was originally delivered to Japan before being imported to the United States under prior ownership. It was subsequently acquired in California in 2020, with its previous caretaker reportedly investing approximately $20k in maintenance and repairs. More recently, the car underwent a comprehensive maintenance inspection and service at Bocca Motors in February 2026. Previously sold here on PCARMARKET, this rare Italian grand tourer is now being offered for auction in Connecticut with approximately 74k kilometers (~45k miles) showing on the odometer.
Penned by legendary designer Marcello Gandini, the Shamal features muscular, angular bodywork distinguished by dramatically flared wheel arches, sculpted side skirts, and a distinctive black-finished roll hoop incorporating Shamal badging on the B-pillars. Its rear wheel arches recall Gandini’s work on the Lamborghini Countach, while the aerodynamic spoiler at the base of the windshield is another signature styling element shared with the De Tomaso Pantera 90 Si. Additional exterior details include rectangular headlamps, integrated fog lights, a subtle rear decklid spoiler, quad exhaust outlets, and factory 16” alloy wheels mounted with Toyo Proxes R1R tires bearing 2017 date codes. The Red paintwork was reportedly treated with a ceramic coating under prior ownership. A replacement windshield washer fluid reservoir was installed during the February 2026 service at Bocca Motors.
