This beautiful 1993 Toyota Land Cruiser HDJ80 is a truck that is very special to me. I originally purchased this Land Cruiser about seven years ago as a personal project. I had always wanted to build a diesel 80 Series, and when I came across this Japanese-market HDJ80, I knew immediately that it was the perfect platform. Under the hood is the legendary Toyota 1HD-T — a 4.2-liter inline-six turbo diesel — and that engine was one of the biggest reasons I wanted this particular Land Cruiser. There is something incredibly special about a diesel 80 Series, and from day one the goal was to build this truck correctly, using quality components throughout while maintaining everything that makes an HDJ80 so special. THE BUILD The Land Cruiser started as an exceptionally clean truck, but we wanted to take it to another level. The body was completely stripped and refinished from top to bottom in Toyota Black, paint code 202. All of the paint and bodywork was professionally completed by Triple R Restoration in Pleasant Grove, Utah. The result is absolutely beautiful. The paint is deep, glossy, straight, and exceptionally clean. Once the body was finished, the build really began. We installed new ARB bumpers front and rear, a new roof rack, new grille, new headlights, new taillights, new mirrors, and tinted the windows. From there, the Land Cruiser went to Ultimate 4x4 in Orem, Utah, where it received a complete Ironman 4x4 2.5-inch suspension lift along with the supporting heavy-duty suspension components needed to make the entire package work correctly. The stance is absolutely perfect. It is sitting on Black Rhino wheels wrapped in 33-inch General Grabber tires with a matching full-size spare mounted out back. It has the aggressive look an 80 Series deserves without being overdone. TRIPLE LOCKED This is where things get even better. Brand-new Eaton electric differential lockers were installed front and rear, complementing the factory center differential lock and making this HDJ80 TRIPLE LOCKED. Front Eaton electric locker. Rear Eaton electric locker. Factory center differential lock. A 12,000-pound Rough Country winch was also installed up front, making this Land Cruiser every bit as functional as it looks. This isn't a truck that simply looks the part. It was built to be used. 1HD-T TURBO DIESEL Of course, the heart of this Land Cruiser is Toyota's legendary 1HD-T 4.2-liter inline-six turbo diesel. The 1HD-T is exactly what makes an HDJ80 so desirable. Smooth, torquey, durable, and perfectly suited to the 80 Series chassis, it completely changes the personality of the Land Cruiser compared with the gasoline-powered versions we normally see here in the United States. The engine starts immediately, runs beautifully, and pulls strong. The transmission shifts smoothly, the steering is tight, and the entire truck feels incredibly solid going down the road. MECHANICAL & SERVICE This Land Cruiser has also been thoroughly serviced and gone through mechanically. We have invested heavily in making sure the truck isn't simply beautiful — it is ready to drive and enjoy. Within the last year, Major League Auto Repair in Pleasant Grove completely went through and rebuilt the front knuckles and Birfield assemblies. At the same time, the new Eaton electric differential lockers were installed. It has also received: • New OEM timing belt • New OEM water pump • New engine seals and gaskets as needed • New sway bar links • New brake pads • New brake rotors • New brake lines on all four corners • Fresh fluids throughout • Complete inspection and servicing Everything has been addressed. Everything is fresh. This is not a diesel 80 Series that you need to buy and immediately begin sorting out. It is turnkey and ready to go. INTERIOR The interior is every bit as impressive as the exterior. It features gray leather seating with factory heated seats, power accessories, a power sunroof, factory air conditioning that still blows ice cold, and one of my favorite Japanese-market features — the factory cool-box center console. We also installed a beautiful steering wheel imported from Saudi Arabia along with a Pioneer touchscreen infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay, giving the truck some modern functionality without taking away from the classic 80 Series experience. The seats, carpets, panels, dash, headliner, and interior trim are all exceptionally well preserved. It is clean, comfortable, and exactly the type of interior you want to see when you open the door of a Land Cruiser of this caliber. BACK HOME AT TYACKE MOTORS After completing the build, I enjoyed this Land Cruiser personally before eventually selling it to one of our customers a couple of years ago. Recently, I had the opportunity to take it back in on trade. I couldn't be more excited to have it back. There is something especially satisfying about seeing a vehicle you spent years building come back through the doors and realizing that it is still every bit as cool as you remember it. This HDJ80 represents years of planning, sourcing parts, building, servicing, and refining. It combines one of Toyota's most legendary Land Cruiser platforms with one of its most desirable diesel engines and a long list of carefully selected upgrades.
