Known around the world as the VW Bus, the Volkswagen Type 2 has long symbolized freedom, adventure, and simple, honest motoring. From surfers chasing waves to families chasing sunsets, the Kombi earned its place as one of the most recognizable vehicles ever built. As once noted by Popular Mechanics, the Microbus was so original in concept that it took more than a decade for true competitors to emergeeffectively becoming the original minivan and a cultural icon all at once.Offered here is a 1996 example, presenting as a clean and well-preserved tribute to that enduring legacy. Finished in classic white over a two-tone gray interior, this water-cooled Kombi reflects the later evolution of the Type 2 while retaining its unmistakable silhouette. Showing just 71k kilometers, averaging fewer than 2,800 km per year since new, this bus has clearly benefited from pride of ownership. It has successfully passed U.S. Customs and carries a clean Michigan title, ready for its next chapter on American roads. The exterior remains impressively straight and well maintained. The paint finish retains a smooth gloss, body panels align properly, and the distinctive painted front grille, signifying its water-cooled configuration, is clean and free of damage. Extensive cabin glass and lighting lenses are clear, factory VW badging remains correctly mounted, and the original 14-inch painted wheels with chrome VW-embossed hubcaps add authentic character. Minor roof scratches are noted, but overall presentation reflects careful stewardship and low mileage.Inside, the gray-themed cabin is inviting and functional. Front high-back bucket seats show only light wear consistent with gentle use, while gray carpeting and trim panels remain tidy. In the rear passenger compartment, accessed through the sliding side door, a forward-facing bench seat folds flat for sleeping, complemented by well-kept custom wood cabinetry and storage cubbies. Black-and-white checkered curtains accent the windows, reinforcing the bus's vintage spirit. The clean headliner, simple VW dash layout, floor-mounted 4-speed manual shifter, and upgraded audio head unit complete a practical yet charming interior space designed for road trips and weekend escapes.Power comes from the numbers-matching 1.8-liter, fuel-injected, water-cooled inline-four mounted at the rear, paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. The engine bay is clean and properly presented, with no signs of aftermarket modification, and the chassis remains straight and undisturbed underneath. Full-length coolant lines from the front-mounted radiator are intact and correctly routed, underscoring the thoughtful engineering of these later Kombis. Clean, honest, and ready for adventure, this 1996 Type 2 Kombi captures the spirit of peace, love, and open highwayswaiting for its next caretaker to turn the key and set out toward the horizon.
