1998 Land Rover Defender

Vehicle Description 1998 Land Rover Defender $94,997 1998 Land Rover Defender 90 — 300Tdi Diesel, Right-Hand Drive, UK-Registered, Safari-Ready Build Why This Car Is Special The Land Rover Defender 90 has one of the longest and most straightforward production histories in the off-road world. The basic architecture traces back to the original Series I Land Rover of 1948, and the vehicle that became the Defender 90 — named for its 90-inch wheelbase — was refined into its most capable form during the 1990s. When Land Rover introduced the 300Tdi engine in 1994 as a replacement for the 200Tdi, it addressed the earlier unit's main criticisms with improved noise levels, better cooling, revised injection timing, and a more robust cylinder head. The 300Tdi quickly became the definitive Defender diesel engine, and 1994–2006 300Tdi-powered examples remain among the most sought-after on the used market today, particularly in the United States where federally compliant examples are now old enough to import legally under the 25-year rule. This specific 1998 Land Rover Defender 90 is a UK-registered, right-hand drive example that was built at Solihull and spent its early life in Britain before making the Atlantic crossing. The UK registration plate — G377 KUH — is worth noting: UK 'G' prefix plates were issued from August 1989 through July 1990, which means this vehicle carries a registration older than its actual build date. This is not unusual for Defenders that were re-registered or had their plates transferred during ownership changes in the UK. What matters to the buyer is what the vehicle actually is: a 1998-model-year Defender 90 with the 300Tdi engine, a 5-speed manual gearbox, permanent four-wheel drive, and a well-considered suite of expedition-grade accessories added over its life. The odometer reads 114,311 miles, which on a properly maintained 300Tdi is a number that inspires confidence rather than concern. These engines are routinely rebuilt or replaced at 200,000 miles or more, and the drivetrain underneath this Defender shows no signs of neglect. The 1998 Land Rover Defender 90 was never sold new in the United States. Land Rover pulled the Defender from the American market after the 1997 model year due to side-impact safety regulations, which means any Defender 90 of this vintage you see stateside arrived via legal grey-market import after satisfying the 25-year exemption, or was brought in through other channels. That limited supply — combined with a global collector market that has driven Defender prices sharply upward over the past decade — makes every legitimate, well-equipped example meaningful. This one has been built out with overlanding and expedition accessories that complement rather than compromise the truck's original character. It produces approximately 111 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque in standard form, with peak torque arriving low in the rev range — the characteristic that makes it so effective off-road. The engine in this 1998 Land Rover Defender 90 is paired to the R380 5-speed manual gearbox, which was an upgrade over the older LT77 unit
