Vehicle Description 1999 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra $24,997 1999 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Convertible — White over Tan, 4.6L DOHC V8, 5-Speed Manual Why This Car Is Special The 1999 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Convertible sits at the top of the SN95 Mustang hierarchy. SVT — Ford's Special Vehicle Team — was formed in 1991 specifically to develop high-performance versions of production Ford vehicles, and the Cobra was their flagship Mustang product throughout the 1990s. What separated the SVT Cobra from a standard Mustang GT was not just horsepower, but engineering depth: a purpose-built engine, a fully independent rear suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and a transmission rated for serious abuse. The 1999 model year was particularly significant for the Cobra. After a well-documented controversy in 1996 when SVT's Cobra fell short of its advertised horsepower figures, the team returned in 1999 with a revised 4.6-liter DOHC 32-valve V8 rated at 320 horsepower — a figure that independent testing of the time generally confirmed or exceeded. Ford also addressed the independent rear suspension setup, which in earlier Cobras had come in for criticism, and the 1999 car was widely regarded as the most sorted and capable SN95 Cobra to date when it was introduced. The convertible body style adds another layer of desirability. Open-top Cobras were built in smaller numbers than their coupe counterparts, making them less common in the collector market today. This particular car is finished in white over a full tan leather interior — a combination that photographs well and holds up in the Florida climate — and carries the correct SVT-specific equipment throughout, from the white-face gauges to the Cobra-badged leather steering wheel to the independent rear suspension hardware visible in the undercarriage photos. The undercarriage itself is notably clean, which tells you something useful about where this car has spent most of its life. The VIN confirms this is a genuine convertible (body style code '46') with the 4.6-liter DOHC V8 (engine code 'V'), assembled at the Dearborn Assembly Plant ('F'), which is exactly where SVT Cobras were built during this generation. Nothing about this car's identity is in question. SVT's version used four-valve-per-cylinder heads, a revised intake manifold, and a higher compression ratio to produce 320 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. The engine cover wears the Cobra snake emblem, and the valve covers are clearly marked 'V8 32 Valve,' just as they left the factory. The engine bay in the photos is honest and intact — original components, no evidence of modifications, and the SVT badging on the intake is present and correct. Backing the V8 is the Tremec T45 5-speed manual, a robust close-ratio gearbox that SVT specified for its shift feel and durability. The T45 was a meaningful upgrade over the T-5 used in earlier Mustangs. It handled torque loads more confidently and gave drivers a more direct, mechanical feel through the gate. The independent rear suspension is one of the defining mechanical features of the SVT Cobra and one of the primary reasons these cars command a premium over the live-axle GT.
