Description
The Overview A Soldier Reborn The example presented here, VIN 18S4J988S31232800, is no ordinary survivor. Finished in deep military green over a four-door hard-top body, this M1151A1 was commissioned by as the canvas for a singular project: a ground-up, road-going reinterpretation executed by AVI of Newton, Massachusetts, and designated by its makers a Bespoke Edition build. Where most Humvees in private hands are left as the Army surrendered them, this one was studied, measured, and rebuilt with the patience of a coachbuilder. For more than four decades, no vehicle has embodied American military mobility more completely than the High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle. Conceived by AM General in the late 1970s and adopted by the United States Army in 1983, the HMMWV — the Humvee — replaced the Jeep, the M561 Gama Goat, and a fleet of light tactical trucks with a single, immensely capable platform. Built around a steel frame, a fully boxed body, independent suspension at all four corners, and geared portal hubs that lift the differentials clear of the earth, it was designed to go where wheeled vehicles were not supposed to go. The M1151A1 represents one of the most developed branches of that lineage. An up-armored armament carrier, it pairs the proven General Engine Products 6.5-liter turbo-diesel V8 and four-speed automatic with a reinforced chassis and heavier-duty running gear, the configuration the platform reached as the Humvee matured into the 21st century. It is, in short, the Humvee at its most serious — and precisely the foundation a discerning build deserves. HMMWV # 31232800 AVI began not with a parts catalogue but with a complete 3D scan of the vehicle — sides, front, rear hatch, and all interior surfaces — capturing the data needed to reverse-engineer components that fit as though they had always belonged. From that survey came, per the AVI build invoice, hundreds of hours of CAD work and in-house fabrication across large-format and resin 3D printing. The brief was disciplined: preserve the rugged, utilitarian character of the Humvee in every part, while threading modern luxury, technology, and audio invisibly through it. Nowhere is this clearer than in the signature center console, a piece that alone absorbed, per the AVI build invoice, more than forty hours of design time. Scanned, modeled, fabricated, and finished in-house, it integrates a Vaultek DS2i Smart Station biometric firearm safe with fingerprint access, wireless phone charging, integrated cup holders, concealed storage, and a digital status display set into its face — all wrapped in leather and padded surfaces that would not look out of place in a far more delicate machine. The technology suite is equally considered. A Kenwood Excelon DAX1050XR digital media receiver anchors the dash behind a 10.1-inch floating touchscreen, carrying Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, SiriusXM, and a purpose-built off-road pitch-and-roll display, all housed in a custom-fabricated enclosure designed to marry the screen to the H1’s architecture. An RVS inView 360-degree HD bird’s-eye camera system with AI and DVR recording surrounds the vehicle through four cameras in AVI-designed housings, feeding a dedicated in-dash monitor, while a VOXX/Gentex full-display rearview mirror on a custom aluminum mount restores the rearward vision a slantback Humvee otherwise lacks. The sound system — two pairs of JL Audio Evolution C2-650 components in bespoke 3D-printed mounts and rear-hatch housings — was tuned specifically for this vehicle. The functional upgrades are no less thorough. J.W. Speaker 8700 Evolution 2 LED headlamps light the way; a pair of Rigid Industries SR-Series LED lamps serves as reverse lighting, paired with a reverse circuit and switch installed where the military chassis had none. A VIAIR-based 150 PSI quad-trumpet air horn system, with its own compressor and seamless tank, supplies a voice to match the presence. Amber ambient and white footwell lighting warm the cabin at night, a quilted, diamond-stitched headliner and trim soften it by day, and the vehicle rolls on 20-inch Black Rhino wheels wrapped in aggressive 37-inch Milestar Patagonia mud-terrains. New rear-door gaskets, color-matched paintwork on detail components, and discreet AVI “Bespoke Edition” badging at the rear complete the presentation. The cabin is fitted with correct Humvee seating, while the factory brush guard and recovery shackles remain in place as proper military equipment, retained as the platform intended. Showing just 3,698 miles, the truck is accompanied by its complete AVI build invoice, which documents the full scope of the commission in detail. For the collector who wants the unmistakable presence of an up-armored Humvee without surrendering the comforts and technology of a finished modern vehicle, it offers something almost no other example can: a genuine M1151A1 reborn as a documented, one-off commission, with the engineering rigor to back the ambition.
