The Speciale earns its moniker by addressing three basic tenets of suprecardom: Power, Grip, and Aerodynamics. As the most extremely-focused Ferrari V8 sports car in history, the 458 Speciale bristles with technical solutions and race-inspired design that make it unique for owners seeking an even more extreme sports car. Innovations span the entire car, including Ferrari patents and world firsts. Standard features for this road-legal race car include; SCM2 Magnetic Suspension Damping, Electronic E-Diff Rear Differential, CST Stability and Traction Control, Steering Wheel Manettino F-1 Systems Mode Control, VDA Vehicle Dynamic Assistance, 2 TFT Screens in Instrument Cluster. Ferrari Genuine Maintenance Program to 5/22/2017 (unlimited miles). 7-year scheduled Ferrari maintenance to 5/22/2021. Exotic-car manufacturers love to say their models are race cars for the street, but this 458 Speciale from Maranello, Italy-based Ferrari comes perilously close. It's a faster, leaner and more focused model of an already fast and lean supercar, the 458 Italia. In other words, how about an extra dose of extreme with your excess? The Speciale gets 605 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque from its 4.5-liter V-8, which is truly significant for an engine without the aid of turbochargers or superchargers. Compact, sculpted, performance-shaped forms have top priority at the Ferrari Style Center and Pininfarina. Ferrari is knee-deep in aerodynamic R&D, and like an airplane, the Speciale employs a series of flaps that variously open, close or deploy to keep the car better planted on the asphalt at high velocity or make it easier to turn at lower speeds. With lightning reflexes, the 458 Speciale responds to driver input. Perhaps anticipates it. On the road or track, drivers will immediately meld into the seat and discern the synaptic immediacy of all major controls. Razor-sharp handling balance delivers an intense driving experience in the 458 Speciale, Ferrari's highest performance V8. A strong racing-derived atmosphere permeates the cockpit. Exclusive, lightweight materials dominate. Most things you touch are made of carbon fiber. Your feet rest on a sheath of aluminum. Yet, craftsmanship sophistication and hand-stitched leathers expected in such an exclusive Ferrari abound. Styling retains the 458 Italia's aesthetic sense, with some materials and forms actually overlapping for visual interest. The interior of the 2014 Ferrari 458 Speciale is elegant but purposeful. The glovebox and carpets are deleted, Sabelt race seats featuring carbon-fiber shells are standard and there's enough Alcantara to cover a garage door. Still, the eyes and then the fingers are drawn irresistibly to the perfectly sculpted steering wheel, which holds plenty of buttons, none of them controlling mundane functions such as audio volume or cruise control. At the lower right, housed in a carbon-fiber insert, is the red lever of the Manettino that controls the five performance settings. At the lower left is a scarlet Engine Start button. When pressed, the engine coughs to life like a formidable monster clearing its throat after being wakened from a deep sleep.
