Description
The Overview FROM ONE APEX TO THE NEXT From the original Quattro of 1980 onward, four driven wheels were what Audi was known for, and every R8 before the Rear-Wheel Series had carried it. For the RWS, Audi Sport took the front driveshaft, the multi-plate clutch and the front-axle differential out of the car, saving 110 pounds, and left the naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 to send all 532 horsepower through a seven-speed S tronic gearbox to the rear tires alone. A matte black grille and air intakes set the car apart, and an emblem on the dash reading “1 of 999” recorded how many Audi would build globally, coupes and Spyders together. Just 320 of them came to the United States. “This car shouldn’t exist,” Victoria Parrott wrote for Motor1 in March 2018. “It’s a unicorn in vehicular form: a rear-wheel drive Audi.” After the R8’s 2019 facelift, rear-wheel drive joined the regular range, and the model closed its run with the 333-car R8 GT RWD before the last R8 left Böllinger Höfe on March 22, 2024. The RWS came first, and Parrott found the difference at the front of the car: “The steering is a particular delight that you don’t get in the standard car. It’s got a sort of mesmeric silkiness to it that sucks you from one apex to the next.” R8 V10 RWS #J7902290 Audi’s order record shows chassis J7902290 as a customer order, placed in June 2018, completed at Böllinger Höfe that September, and delivered new through Audi North Houston in November. Its first owner chose Ibis White over Express Red and added the factory RWS exterior graphics — the Misano Red stripe — and specified the Carbon interior package, the Premium package and 20-inch wheels, with the front license plate holder deleted. As ordered, the car carried an MSRP of $154,400. The solid Ibis White holds hard sun evenly, with clean, unbroken highlights along the shoulder and the scallop of the door. The Misano Red stripe runs from the nose over the hood, steps across the roof and ends in two bars across the rear deck, its edges crisp and its sections lined up across the shut line. Gloss black Y-spoke wheels frame red calipers. Inside, the Express Red leather is deep and saturated against black upper surfaces, with gloss carbon on the console, the instrument hood and the vents. Red paddles and a red start button carry the color to the wheel. Through the rear glass sits the atmospheric V10. White over red with the stripe is the boldest way to specify an RWS, and this example wears it beautifully. The first owner kept the R8 in Texas for more than five years and covered roughly 8,700 miles, about 1,600 a year. It came north in 2024 and has been registered in Massachusetts since that August. Audi Peabody serviced it at 12,324 miles in April 2025 and, two weeks later, set a four-wheel alignment and fitted two new tires. EuroTech Motorsports of Natick carried out its latest recorded oil service at 15,469 miles in April 2026. It shows 17,247 miles today. Technical Specifications 5.2-Liter DOHC 40-Valve V10 with Direct Fuel Injection 532 HP; 398 Lb-Ft 7-Speed S tronic Dual-Clutch Transmission Rear-Wheel Drive Curb Weight 3,505 Lb, 110 Lb Lighter Than the Quattro Coupe 20-Inch Wheels Provenance Original owner, Cypress, Texas (customer order, delivered new through Audi North Houston, November 2018) Private owner, Peabody, Massachusetts (acquired 2024) AVI Gallery, Newton, Massachusetts (acquired 2026)
