2003 BMW 5 Series 540i

Few luxury sport sedans have earned the lasting enthusiast respect of the E39-generation BMW 5 Series, and this 2003 BMW 540i represents the final model year of that celebrated platform. Finished in a beautiful blue exterior over a gray interior with rich wood-grain accents, this example has covered only 69,236 miles since new—an especially compelling figure for a V8-powered performance sedan now more than two decades removed from production. Its clean CARFAX, verified via CARFAX, documents ownership history in California and Arizona, adding further appeal to an already highly desirable final-year E39. The heart of the 540i is BMW’s M62TUB44 4.4-liter V8, an all-aluminum, double-overhead-camshaft engine developed to deliver the smoothness expected of an executive sedan with the power and torque demanded from a serious driver’s car. Rated at 290 horsepower and 324 lb-ft of torque, the naturally aspirated V8 sends its output to the rear wheels, giving the 540i the traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout that has long defined BMW’s most engaging sedans. Its substantial torque arrives low in the rev range, providing the effortless acceleration and immediate throttle response that make the 540i feel powerful without relying on turbocharging. Just as important as the engine is the E39 chassis surrounding it. BMW engineered this generation with an aluminum-intensive suspension system, using a double-pivot front arrangement and sophisticated multi-link rear suspension to reduce unsprung weight while balancing ride comfort, stability, and handling control. The 540i’s V8 installation required a recirculating-ball steering system, which provides linear response and a substantial, confidence-inspiring feel. The result is a sedan designed to remain composed during highway travel while retaining the chassis communication and rear-wheel-drive balance enthusiasts expect from a classic BMW. The 2003 model year carries special historical importance because it marked the final opportunity to purchase the traditionally styled E39 before the completely redesigned 5 Series arrived for 2004. BMW also introduced several meaningful updates for 2003. Rear head-protection airbags, previously optional, became standard throughout the 5 Series lineup. A DVD-based navigation system became available, and the 540i received a newly developed Sport Package that was standard with the manual transmission and optional with the automatic. That package incorporated 18-inch wheels, revised sport suspension tuning, front and rear aerodynamic treatments, visible exhaust outlets, black exterior moldings, a black headliner, titanium-ringed gauges, and an M-branded driver’s footrest. This 540i also displays one of the most recognizable visual signatures of BMW’s early-2000s design era: its corona-ring headlights. These illuminated rings frame the headlamps and give the front of the E39 an unmistakable nighttime identity while complementing the sedan’s clean kidney grilles, restrained body lines, and carefully proportioned exterior. Rather than depending upon excessive ornamentation, the E39 communicates its performance through purposeful details and timeless proportions. Inside, the gray cabin is accented by traditional wood-grain trim, creating the warm, upscale atmosphere associated with BMW’s executive models of this period. The power glass sunroof opens the cabin to additional light and fresh air while reinforcing the 540i’s combination of performance and long-distance luxury. The controls are arranged around the driver, and the solid materials, substantial switchgear, and restrained design illustrate why this generation remains so highly regarded for its build quality. With only 69,236 miles, a clean CARFAX verified via CARFAX, documented California and Arizona ownership history, rear-wheel drive, the formidable M62TUB44 V8, classic corona-ring lighting, and the distinction of being a final-year E39, this 2003 BMW 540i brings together the attributes that have made this generation an enduring enthusiast favorite. It is a compelling example of an era when BMW combined understated styling, naturally aspirated V8 power, substantial construction, and genuine driver involvement in one exceptionally capable luxury sedan.
