Description
The Overview The Factory as Historian The 812 GTS arrived in 2019 as something Ferrari had not offered for half a century: a series-production spider with twelve naturally aspirated cylinders ahead of the driver, the first of its kind since the 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider of 1969. Ferrari described it at launch as the most powerful production convertible on the market, its 6.5-litre V12 producing 789 horsepower at 8,500 rpm, and when the factory closed the model’s order books globally in February 2022, every subsequent car went to fill an existing order. A 2022-build 812 GTS is, accordingly, a car from the closing run of the model. Within that closing run sits a far smaller group. In 2020 Ferrari’s Tailor Made programme introduced the Ispirazioni collection: thirty-six curated configurations, twelve each for the Roma, SF90 Stradale and 812 GTS, every one created by the same design team responsible for the model’s development. RM Sotheby’s, which catalogued a sister car at its Arizona 2026 sale, records the collection as twelve cars on the 812 GTS. These were not option-list exercises. Each commission was built around a single inspiration, developed with the factory’s own designers, specified in off-catalogue paints and hides, and recorded in metal, the car carrying a dedication plate that names what inspired it; documented sister commissions on this model draw on raw aluminum, on the 275 GTB/4, and on the 250 TR Lucybelle II. A commission of this depth presumes a standing with Maranello that the Tailor Made programme exists to serve; the client chooses from the studio’s portfolio of themes, and the factory’s designers compose the car around it. The theme this car carries reaches to the deepest stratum of that history. Ferraris won the Tour de France Automobile nine consecutive times between 1956 and 1964, and the 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione, seventy-seven built across four Scaglietti series and five Zagato-bodied cars to a Pinin Farina design, took its enduring name from the event. The name was never a factory designation; Ferrari itself acknowledges that it was conferred afterwards. It endured because the event was the longest and most varied examination a grand touring car could face: roughly 5,400 kilometres over a week, decided across full circuit races and mountain hillclimbs. In September 1956 Alfonso de Portago and Ed Nelson won it outright in chassis 0557 GT, taking five of the six circuit events and beating Stirling Moss’s works Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. Offering that very car at Paris in 2026, RM Sotheby’s wrote: “This exact chassis is the only known car to single-handedly change the name of its own model range following its monumental victory in the period’s most challenging race.” Chassis No. 272675 Factory records show chassis 272675 completed in 2021 and delivered that November through Ferrari of New England of Norwood, Massachusetts, its build documented in an original factory build book dated 17 November 2021 and attested the same day by a factory Attestato per vetture con Allestimenti Speciali, the certification Ferrari issues for cars built outside the series specification. The option plate records the commission in three codes: TAIL for Tailor Made, SPEC for Special Equipment, and TMIS, Tailor Made Ispirazioni. The inspiration is named in metal. A silver dedication plate between the seats reads “Inspired by the 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione ‘TdF’” beneath a French tricolour stripe, and the gloss carbon kickplate is lettered ISPIRAZIONI. The car is finished in Blu Flugplaz, an off-catalogue shade applied extracampionario, over an interior in Connolly VM846 Luxan leather. The tricolour livery, recorded as factory paint on the PPG label, carries its white stripe in Bianco Bianco and runs from the front bumper mouth across the front lid, roof, and tonneau to the rear lid, and the doors carry white roundels enclosing the number 171 in Nero DS. Ball-polished forged wheels, glossy black callipers, carbon sill kicks, and a matte-black front bumper mouth complete the exterior. The theme itself is believed to have been built just four times. Sister commissions are recorded in Asia and have been sighted in Europe, a fourth car is reported in New Zealand, and no other is known in the Americas. That number is the commission’s argument. It is the number Jacques Péron and Georges Burggraff carried to fifth overall at the 1957 Tour de France Automobile in chassis 0563 GT, the eighth of the nine first-series berlinettas, finishing directly behind Stirling Moss’s 300 SL in an edition where Ferraris swept the first three places and only 37 of 113 starters were classified. Nor was that the car’s first Tour: in 1956 Péron had driven it to eighth overall as number 75, the second 250 GT home behind de Portago’s winning 0557 GT. Péron, a privateer who had won the Tour outright in 1953 driving an OSCA, was 45 years old that September. The car this 812 GTS honours was therefore present at the renaming itself, one of the small handful of berlinettas whose results made “Tour de France” a name rather than a nickname. The cabin is trimmed in Connolly VM846 Luxan, a hide from the historic English upholstery house, with comfort seats in vertical ribbing, tone-on-tone stitching in three threads, and Cavallini embroidered on the headrests in Beige. Mats in Tapioca ultrasuede sit beneath additional Astico rubber mats edged in Connolly leather, and the factory handy fire extinguisher remains strapped in the passenger footwell. One owner from new, the car was first registered in Massachusetts on 31 December 2021 at 48 miles and has passed its annual state inspections in Norwood ever since, the odometer recorded at 648 miles in 2023, 965 in 2024, 1,347 in 2025, and 1,733 this past April. It shows 1,902 miles today. The presentation is precisely what those figures suggest: all four ball-polished wheels are free of kerbing, the carbon splitter and leading edges are unmarked, the livery is crisp at
