Safety tips

Most buyers and sellers are genuine. These habits protect you from the few who aren't.

Never wire money before seeing the car

Don't send deposits by wire transfer, gift cards, crypto or payment apps to someone you haven't met. Scammers often claim to be abroad, in the military or using an “escrow service” — those are red flags.

Before you buy

  • Inspect the car in person, in daylight, ideally with a mechanic or a pre-purchase inspection.
  • Check that the VIN on the car matches the title and the listing, and run a vehicle history report.
  • Make sure the seller's name matches the title, and that there's no outstanding loan.
  • If the price looks far below market, be extra careful — check the Market report for comparable sales.

Meeting and paying

  • Meet in a busy public place during the day, and bring someone with you.
  • Pay with a traceable method such as a cashier's check verified with the issuing bank, or complete the sale at a bank.
  • Get a signed bill of sale and the signed title before you hand over payment.

For sellers

  • Keep conversations in writing until you're comfortable, and only share your phone number when you choose to.
  • Don't accept overpayments or requests to refund the difference.
  • Go along on test drives and check the buyer's driver's license first.
