This 1983 Volkswagen Rabbit GTI was first delivered to Riverside Volkswagen of Gallipolis, Ohio, in December 1982 and the 1.8-liter inline-four was subsequently fitted with a Stage II turbocharger system by Callaway Turbosystems of Old Lyme, Connecticut, in August 1983. Additional equipment includes a five-speed manual transaxle, 14” alloy wheels, black impact bumpers, and a rear window wiper. The car is finished in Cashmere White over red velour upholstery.
The car is finished in Cashmere White (LE9C) with red grille trim, front and rear impact bumpers, a front air dam, black stripes, and a rear window wiper.
Factory 14″ snowflake wheels are fitted with Dunlop Direzza ZIII tires measuring 185/60 all around and showing 2020 date codes. The GTI came from the factory with a sport-tuned suspension, front and rear sway bars, and ventilated front disc brakes, and modifications that were part of the Callaway package are said to include a heavy-duty front sway bar and lower stress bar. The seller reports a four-wheel alignment was recently performed.
The cabin features red velour-trimmed front bucket seats with matching vinyl door panels and red carpets. Amenities include a golf-ball shift knob, Rabbit-branded floor mats, an AM/FM cassette radio, and an analog clock.
A GTI-branded steering wheel frames an 85-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level. A VDO boost gauge is mounted to the right of the instrument cluster, and an additional three-gauge pod in the center console includes voltage and oil temperature readouts as well as an analog clock. The six-digit mechanical odometer shows 19k miles.
The 1.8-liter inline-four was fitted with a Stage II turbocharger by Callaway Turbosystems in August 1983 which raised rated output to 200 horsepower when new. A Turbonetics wastegate and a Borla muffler are installed, and recent service included replacing the timing belt, sump gasket, engine mounts, cam timing cover and sprocket, and spark plugs.
Power is sent to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle. The transmission was serviced, the clutch cable was replaced, and new shifter bushings were installed in preparation for sale.
