The 1971 Volvo 142E was previously owned by IPD founder Richard Gordon and was used as a development and test vehicle for the chassis. The body is finished in white, and power is provided by a modified 2,130cc B20 inline-four paired with an M41 four-speed manual transmission and an electrically actuated overdrive unit. Equipment includes a black leather interior, 15″ alloy wheels, Bilstein shocks, lowering springs, four-wheel disc brakes, a glass moonroof, a custom exhaust system, a front spoiler, a Volvo Rallye gauge cluster, a Moto-Lita steering wheel, and a Blaupunkt AM/FM stereo system.
The car is finished in white and features an aftermarket front spoiler, aftermarket moonroof, inboard rally-style lights in the front grille, a chrome side mirror, and a polished fuel cap. The front bumper has been removed, and the rear bumper is painted to match the body.
Aftermarket 15″ wheels are wrapped in Goodyear Eagle Sport tires that show 2015 date codes. The suspension is modified with Bilstein shocks, lowering springs, front and rear sway bars, and polyurethane bushings. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs, and a fluid flush was recently carried out.
The cabin features front and rear seats trimmed in black leather along with matching door panels and carpets protected by checkered floor mats. A custom center console houses two gauges and an 1800E shifter. Additional features include a heater, a wide rearview mirror, a Blaupunkt AM/FM stereo system, and an IPD air/fuel ratio adjustment box mounted under the dash.
A Moto-Lita steering wheel fronts Volvo Rallye GT-style instrumentation including a 130-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 74k miles.
The replacement fuel-injected B20 inline-four was rebuilt to 2,130cc by GW Performance of Portland, Oregon in 1994. The rebuild included replacement pistons, an aftermarket camshaft, a ported and polished cylinder head, replacement lifters, and dual valve springs. Additional equipment includes an IPD finned valve cover, an IPD exhaust manifold, and a custom exhaust system. Service in anticipation of the sale included a mechanical inspection, a compression test, and an oil change.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through an M41 four-speed manual transmission equipped with an electrically actuated Laycock de Normanville overdrive.
Owner’s manuals are included in the sale along with service records, a logbook, and a selection of removed parts.
