This 1979 Volkswagen Super Beetle convertible is a Canadian-market example that was imported into the US and spent time in Washington State before relocating to Colorado, where it was acquired by the seller in 2020. The car is finished in gold with a padded black soft top over a brown vinyl interior and is powered by a fuel-injected 1.6-liter flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. Modifications performed under current ownership have included a five-lug conversion as well as installation of front disc brakes, front adjustable struts, and 15″ EMPI wheels. Maintenance completed since the seller’s acquisition has included replacement of the fluids, filters, and hoses, as well as installation of replacement axles and suspension components.
The car left the factory in Pearl Metallic and was reportedly repainted in a matching color under previous ownership. Features include a padded black soft top, chrome bumpers, and dual side mirrors.
EMPI 15″ “gas burner” wheels wear black-finished centers, polished lips, and center caps with colored Porsche crest emblems and are mounted with Nexen SB802 tires. A five-lug conversion was performed under current ownership, and the front suspension was refurbished with adjustable struts and urethane bushings as well as replacement control arm ball joints and tie rods. The braking system was also upgraded with installation of front disc brakes as well as a replacement master cylinder and rear drums.
The cabin features front bucket seats trimmed in brown basketweave vinyl joined by matching door cards as well as a black dashboard with woodgrain trim. Additional interior equipment includes an EMPI shifter, a VDO clock, an Eberspacher gas heater, a rear defroster, and a Sentrek AM/FM cassette stereo. The front seat covers are said to have been replaced during current ownership.
The four-spoke steering wheel features a Wolfsburg-crest and frames a 160-km/h speedometer with an inset fuel-level gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 43k kilometers (~27k miles).
The air-cooled 1.6L dual-port flat-four features fuel injection and was factory rated at 48 horsepower and 73 lb-ft of torque. Maintenance under current ownership included performing fluid changes and replacing the distributor cap, rotor, engine air filter, fuel filter, and fuel hoses.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle. The drive seals at the transaxle were reportedly replaced under current ownership along with the CV joints and axles.
