Description
This Porsche 944 Turbo Cup is one of an estimated 39 produced for the Rothmans Turbo Cup series in Canada, and it was delivered to Porsche Downtown Fine Cars of Toronto in April 1988. Formula 2000 racer Stéphane Proulx earned two pole positions and a victory at Shannonville driving the car during the 1988 season, and in 1989 it served as the VIP guest car sponsored by Diet 7UP, piloted by Jacques “Uncle Jacques” Villeneuve, Davy Jones, and other notable racers as well as writer Don Fuller, who penned a feature in the October 1989 issue of Motor Trend . After its third season of series participation, the car was brought to the US by David Donohue and campaigned in EMRA competition. A series of private owners followed, including marque enthusiast Ronald Tietjen, who drove the car in numerous PCA events between 2004 and 2018. Since the seller’s purchase in 2020, approximately $60k has been spent on service including a chassis refresh by PMR in New Jersey and an engine rebuild at Moorespeed in Texas. This 944 Turbo Cup is now offered with logbooks, service records, literature, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Texas title in the name of the seller’s family trust. Manufactured in Weissach, Germany, the 944 Turbo Cup was developed for use in Porsche’s single-make race series and benefited from weight-saving measures including a fiberglass hood and the omission of a sunroof, a rear wiper, a rear hatch release, headlight washers, and power mirrors. The Rothmans 944 Turbo Cup Championship, held in Canada and televised nationally, awarded the season champion a seat in the Rothmans-sponsored Porsche 962C at the following year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans.
