This 1969 Land Rover 88 is a left-hand-drive Series IIA ‘Bugeye’ export model that was initially delivered to Canada and was purchased by the seller in 2019. The ‘Bugeye’ was built as a transitional model to comply with revised 1969 headlight placement regulations, and the nickname is derived from its relocated fender-mounted headlights. The aluminum body panels on this example were refinished in a single-stage application of Pastel Green with Limestone accents according to the seller, who notes work prior to the repaint included rust remediation and replacement of the side and rear doors. Rocky Mountain door tops and a replacement grille are also fitted, and additional work is said to have included welding of the frame at the right-front leaf spring connection followed by an application of rust inhibitor.
Ivory-colored 15″ steel wheels are mounted with 235/75 Goodyear Wrangler tires, and a matching spare equipped with a vintage Goodyear tire is mounted on the hood under a protective cover. The front axle features Warn manually lockable hubs that were serviced during current ownership, with additional work including replacement of the shocks, bushings, brake shoes, and wheel cylinders.
The interior features three individual front seats that were fitted during current ownership, and the seller notes that the front footwells were replaced and refinished. Further additions include lap belts, installation of a replacement wiring harness, refurbishment of the cabin heater, and the application of sound deadening material to the hardtop ceiling.
Centrally mounted instrumentation consists of a 75-mph speedometer and gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level. Approximately 45k miles are indicated on the five-digit odometer.
The 2.25-liter gasoline inline-four is equipped with a single carburetor and was serviced during current ownership with a valve adjustment, a rebuild of the carburetor, bleeding of the clutch hydraulics, and an oil change as well as replacement of the following components:
- Radiator
- Water pump
- Exhaust system
- Clutch master and slave cylinders
- Gaskets
- Ignition coil and spark plugs
- Fuel filters
Power is routed to the rear or all four wheels via a four-speed manual transmission and a two-speed transfer case. Per the seller, the steering relay was replaced with a new component and the steering box was cleaned and lubricated. Additional work is said to have included disassembly of the steering rods, installation of replacement ball joints, and an alignment.
